Just got a water pump housing (used) for my large shaft lower unit. It looks like Mercury just took the small shaft water pump housing and put a larger piece of plactic (sleeve) to fit over the top of it, and shortned the water pipe to sit on top of the orginal housing (either that or I received the wrong housing). Anyone ever look at them side by side?

hi bill, the 3/4'' is larger than the 1/2'', the larger one takes 2 sleeves on the top, a guide tube and sleeve is what it is, the biggest diff. is the size of the water hole, hope this helps, rl

I converted a stock one to work on the big tube. the plastic water outlet on top of the housing has to be shortened and the rubber seal inside of it discarded. and down inside of the housing where the water starts up the tube has to be opened up a bit. The one I had for a Hi-po motor got damaged and customer did not want to wait for another from merc. I used the damaged Hi-po one as a guide to modify the stockie and you could not tell the difference. I can post pics of it tomorrow if needed. john

NICE PAIR

I buy the regular (small) pump kits and modify them as riverrunner suggest. use my original guide tubes and rtv them on. No problems, cheaper, most places have the small tube pump parts in stock.

I think Balzy posted somewhere how to make this mod. I know I have his engineered drawing on my computer.

But... doesn't the mid plate have a 1/2" hole? I'm pretty sure my 2 piece
is like that. That will slow the flow!

Did some mesuring yesterday. The large shaft housing is exactly the same as the small shaft (at least the one I received) except the pipe can go down into the housing a little bit farther before it hits the rubber gasket, maybe 1/8". Can one of you post pictures of what you did to small housing? This thing sure looks a little odd. I haven't taken the lu off but the large pipe looks like it has to be shorter than the smaller pipe to sit on top of the housing in the sleeve. I don't see how the thing is going to seal correctly. If the pipe doesn't go down into the housing won't it leak where the plastic piece just sits on top of the housing?

the copper tube in the motor is the same length, you have to cut down the plastic "tube" on top of the housing to fit. then the "guide" for the big tube has a flange on it that seals the copper tube to it... I will try to remeber to take some pics today and post them for you.. john

here is the pics of the mod on the stock housing...you can see in first pic where I had to cut down the plastic tube and in second pic (stock)you can see where I removed the rubber seal and the lip that it sets on that has to be removed with a burr bit and in the third pic (modified one) you can see where the opening for the water to exit the housing is opened up for the larger flow... hope this helps.... I did not measure the height of the modified plastic tube, but if you have your old one, just use it to copy... or I can measure it for you if you need me to... any questions, give me a call or pm me... good luck, john 281.455.5108

oh yea, as far as the little plastic "guide" that is used on the stock stuff, the one on the big copper tube motor is different and has a flange on it for the copper tube to seal against... I did not have it avalible when I took the pics, but can run by and get it and photo it if needed... john

EDIT: my pics didnt up load...? will try again.. john
