when you talk about a optimax(xs)you are getting a dirrect injection motor. the 300x is a efi motor. when you see a mercury opti motor that say's dts.. they are talkingh about digital throttle and shift or fly by wire.

when you take into consideration the cost diff between a 250xs and a 300xs (1100.00) i would go with the 300xs. they both carry the same warranty and you will see more mph.i will let you know what i think of the 300xs when i use it this weekend.. latter rick

The 300xs is a stroked 3ltr to a 3.2ltr.
Much more torque to lift you heavy boat.
Plus the direct injected motas consume 40% less fuel.

does the 300 weigh more than the 250 ? and does the 300xs require super unleaded ?

I recently chose the 250 pro xs over the 300xs for two reasons. The 250 uses regular fuel, not premium like the 300. I don't think there are any marnias around me that even sell premium fuel, it's also more expensive. It also comes with the standard 3 year warranty, while the 300 only comes with 2 years.

what kind of hours are the larger optimaxs getting before power head time or major expence ?

sbennett5, you might want to check your warranty, all mercury optimax race motor's come with a 2 year warranty, and a 3 year corrosion warranty. your right on the fuel issue the 300 does use 93 oct. in al cases i would still use 92 as it burn's cleaner and builds less carbon deposit on the air injector..

The new pro xs has a 3 year warranty, the old xs has a 2 year.

That's why I never said racing;)

While we're on the topic, what is the difference between the 250xs and 250 proxs?

I believe the new "PRO" 250xs actually cost more than the 300xs. Guess which I'd buy?

thanks guys, the only question left is how many hours to expect out of a opti . how many hours on your opti ?
i dont expect the 6k hours like a few 4 strokes can get is 3k to many to expect out of a opti ,
i take care of my stuff . i pull the cowel after every use and wipe off any salt spray , flush . and regular maintance ect .

i've seen sea tow boat's with over 1400hrs on the original air pump. i would say that is the only draw back on the opti. all i can say is use the heck out of it while it's under warranty.

how much are air pumps and how often ?

Lost my airpump at around 750 hours on one of my 250XS's (have a twin setup)....I had a merc mechanic do the entire job and it cost me right at $900.00, this might be high but I didn't have the time or expertise to do it myself.

My other motor is still going strong (knock on wood) and so far this was the only motor expense I have had with the 250XS's except for blowing out two lower units, which by the way one blowout was my fault.

The 250XS's motors are fantastic and I will be buying two more in the very near future. As far as engine life the SKA guys run a lot of the 250XS's motors and get well over 1000-1500 hours on them and believe me they run the Pi$$ out of them.

i love mercs , i guess i have to decide to have a moter thats has better performance (merc) 2 stroke
that i might see 2000 hours out of
or get a slower 4 stoke suzki that has a track record of getting 5to 6k hours with minimal troubles
the bigest question is how much performance loss is there from the 250 suzki compaared to the 250 e tec or merc ?
and is that performance gain worth a possible power head at 2k hours and extra cost ?
if i could water test both, i could tell .
i dont know if these numbers are correct but i have been gathering as much data as possible for months now . unless someone has had a opti max with a honest 2or 3k hours on them , then its a no brainer for
me
untill then i still be collecting data
