I put my LU in Reverse gear this weekend and it went I assume half way into gear and locked up. I think the teeth of the gear did not match up, and it killed the engine. I then had extreme trouble trying to get it out of gear to start it up again. I finished my tournment, but I tryed not to use the reverse gear. What is wrong with it, what do you guys expect it to cost?

info. : 1991 mariner mag II , with the small bullet LU. I beleive it has a 1.78 ratio

Help!!!

Thanks,
JB

Justin,
The first thing you may want to do is drain your lube and check for excessive metal in the lube and on the magnetic tip of the drain plug. You could have a problem going on inside. Excessive metal can get in between the sliding clutch and cause it to bind. If you see a lot of metal in the lube and on the plug I would have it taken apart and inspected. Price will vary on the extent of damage.
The XR and Mag gearcases utilize a different shift mechanizm that can wear over time causing a problem.
If it is the OEM gearcase for a Mag II then it will be the small dia. 1.78:1

Yes it is a OEM LU. I have a feeling I will need completely redo the lu. It runs fine forward, but in reverse it sure acts up. I didn't realize how much I use reverse until it started acting up.
Thanks,
