I am giving some thought to a GPS / fishfinder combo. I know nothing about them. Can you help with ideas on which model / best for the buck with good performance.

Can't speak for others but I have the Lowrance 337 in dash mounted and love it....here's a list of the features, you can get it out the door for about $650-$690 depending on where you buy.
