If you put the pump on its side it will leak out.The oil is not isolated from the motor/brushes.Or you got to much oil in its up right position. If you take it apart dont remove the armature its hard to get the brushes back on.I took my pump apart a few years ago.Wish i could use another pump in its place.

If you end up modifing it and need an old external trim pump I've got one you can have. I just took it off my motor when I installed the Mercruiser pump.

The entire trim system from a 90's and up 50 Merc will fit right in with minimal fab work. The ram fits with the stock hardware on the top bracket, and only the bottom will need to be fabbed. The trim is a little too long and needs a relocated bracket. We have done this by welding and by bolting an extension to the plate. Before anyone talks about strength, I have had mine since 1996 on a 20 ft javelin with a built OMC 225 and the last 6 years on a Jet Outboard (v-4 140). We also run them on some other boats with various power. The trim will lift the 225 at full throttle. The standard relay system will work to activate the system
You can even gain a little extra lift, but be careful too not go TOO high. Jackplate integrity might be compromised, as well as the plate might bind at high throttle settings if the plate was too high and begins to flex. For us 5-6 inches of lift seems OK for big engines, but the jets can use a little more. I think the trim has ABOUT 6" of travel I cant find any pics...but if you'd like I can get some
Hope this helps

I just e-mailed Land & Sea a couple of weeks ago, and they told me they still have some bearings in stock, but no pump parts. My jack plate is bleeding down also!

some times changing the fluid in the LnS JP will cure the bleeding down.

...only if draining it dislodges a blockage.

Mine started leaking down this year, so I jammed it in place. :D

I'm going to try changing the fluid. It's worth a try. Do you know what kind of fluid they use?

I worked on a few of these including mine that's on my boat. If it is a prestolite pump there is a small check valve in the pump that has a o-ring that causes the problem. I just did one the the o-ring came out in pieces. and it was leaking down on the guy too. He found 5 rebuild kits and that o-ring does not come in the kit and you can't buy the part. When I did mine I had to custom make a o-ring for the check valve. I did the same to his. Mine has held up for 4 years now. He did find a pump and kits at a place north of here In Hibbing Minnesota and used pump cost him 120.00 kits were 20.

Here are some pics of the jack on my jetboat. It is set to have almost 7" of total lift. I usually only ran it about 6" or lower at high speed when it had the 225 on it. The unit could use some paint, but looks arent a high priority on the jetboat. You cans see in the pic I used a 4" wide 1/2 Alum. bar to extend the plate for the trim. Old L&S jacks had a bracket on the bottom to hold the hyd., so I just moved it down. Since I use the jack spaced away from the transom, this was a good method. The last few we have done have the hyd. unit bolted to the jackplat, so we welded an extension with a fabbed bottom bracket on it to the plate. Worked great and looked prettier, also can bolt the plate flat to the transom.
The trim units are found on Merc/Mar 40-50 hp motors from the early 90's through current years (saw a 2006 50 4-stroke with one today), and Force 40-50 engines from about 94 up.
The old Force trims (with the pump mounted to the side outside of the clamp brackets) would also be a nice fit, but hoses would have to be fabbed and the pump mounted inside the boat.
Be careful..and remember to always overbuild;) mine has been gong strong for 6 years now
Hope this helps
