Has anyone ever tried to get a major organization to bring a race to LI? APBA SBI etc.It seems to me that Jones,Fire Island,Long Beach, the Great South Bay would all have potential. The champ boats in Ct. looked to be a succesful venture. I think that back in the day I remember offshore boats running out Jones Inlet, maybe it was called the Benihana Grand Prix.

Their use to be a Great South Bay race about 25 years ago, nothing since. Montaulk yaucht club had some races until about 15 yrs. ago. Same story. Love off shore racing. It would be nice to have some local action. Any intrest?

I thought it was a race team SNORT. Based out of your garage and Jeffreys bedroom. Ro says she remembers Guy Lombardo running a race here that passed the East Point house; do you remember that?I wasn't here yet. Hockey started last night, damn I ache ,only 58 games to go.

Correct me if I'm wrong, the Benihana was a Pt. Pleasant/Seaside offshore race.

The south shore race was the Freeport Offshore

I think that perhaps Benihana was a sponsor of an early effort here in freeport. You are correct that the NJ race was called the Benihana Grand Prix at one point in time.Long Island seems to have great potential to host many different types of boat racing(I could be wrong),there are certainly many marine industry businesses here that have major credibility in the boating world,it would be nothing less than good business to promote our area to the top racing organizations.

Great info ,as usual S&Fers come up with the good stuff. Awesome photo from the 60s(hey Tom Foley whose bayhouse is in the background!!!).Would love to see more pix like that.I guess what I was picturing is a race that could be seen by 1000's of people (100's)from the beaches or parks of LI.A local race club with affiliation to a sanctioning body , the people who would do the very real work involved,of course, I should have realized. Bash is (and was) everywhere!

You beat me too it. I was just going to post about those time trials. I had an 1980 Checkmate Enchanter with a Merc 225 (Joey I used to maintain it for me back at his original place off Welwood in the industrial area behind the cemetarys) and can remember going (and have pics) to those time trials in like 1981 or 82.

I remember...but I spent more time at Emil Meyer's boat yard in College Point for stock outboard stuff...

Of course our OPC boats ran first out of Gus's Marine in Massapegua...and for years afterward....K&K......(My Glastron in the previous picture was rigged at K&K) Finally Marty O'Neill sold our Shadows for quite a while..... All great race shops..... with serious racers.

One of our Shadows below...in Babylon in 1980.
