Do they run new engines at factory prior to shipping,or just box them up and let dealer do it ????????

I knew I read it some where, sorry it took so long to dig it up.

Taken directly out of Jan-Feb issue of Boat & Motor Dealer.

Article titled "The rise of the phoenix: The rebirth of Evirude and Johnson", By Ben H. Sherwood.

"When we got the the final tank-testing department, I was surprised. First Bombardier is doing 100 percent tank test on all engines before they are boxed and shipped. It is a computerized procedure in specially designed tanks that circulate water in a manner that allows them to use actual propellers in the tank test. I asked why actual props were being used.
Jack Flaig explained: "That's so that each engine will get a realistic customer-oriented test, including how it runs at low and high speeds. Running characteristics as well as various engine readings and all of the systems are checked. Most competitors use a test wheel.

We know that a test wheel has no thrust characteristics. It absorbs the horsepower at high RPM, but it has totally the wrong characteristics at low speed. So, the only place where a test wheel is good to use is at high RPM. Using an actual propeller allows us to test engines under more realistic conditions, especially at the lower RPM." "

Then it goes on to tell the torturious field life tests, which I find rather interesting! After the life testing the engines were still running after 3 times the normal expected life time!!!!! Then they tore them down and the internal parts "looked perfect"!!!!! With few signs of wear. Then they put them back together and they are still running!!!!!!

Mr. Flaig, Sr. Adviser, Bombardier further says, "I have never, in my career, seen this kind of precision put into manufacturing Evinrude and Johnson outboards. The quality of the machining far exceeds anything I have ever seen!"

OOOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! LOOK OUT MERC!!!!!

Of course I did not expect anything less of a Merc guy......LOL :)

I don't think Bombardier would buy a company that was going to go under.

If you're scared....say you're scared!!!!!!

Either they figured lifetime incorrectly or the tests they did didn't reflect a boater using them.

Time to start paying attention to WHO is building OMC products.... Quality is #1 at Bombardier. They also rule in the other industrys they choose to play in.
IF they turn their efforts to outboard racing... Oh mama watch out!

Some people don't seem to realize that competition makes for good business and with Bombardier bringing their endless supply of cash into the market there is no telling what will happen now. Just imagine how much faster and better Merc would be today if Evinrude and Yamaha had been on their ass in the performance market all this time. I'm sure Bombardier will come along with something to shove down you Merc boys throats, and I'm sure Merc will come right back at them with something else. Life is about to get exciting in the outboard market my friends. Mercs complete dominance is about to be over...

This from an above post:

Mercs complete dominance is about to be over...

They were saying that back in the 80's.

The fine line between the Redline and the Finish line is BLACK!

Guys:
It will be interesting to see what Bombardier comes up with. They
do have at their disposal the engineering departments of Rotax
and Ficht, who seem to be pretty sharp guys..............
Speaking as someone who bleeds BLACK, but appreciates the
fact that competition does accellerate the advancement of technology, I hope Bombardier DOES come out with some performance motors. Here's why.
Look at all the terrific new motors Mercury has come out with in the last decade: 200XS, 225X, 250XB, 280, 300X, S3000 and 300
Drag. It's amazing considering they have enjoyed so little competition from the financially weakened OMC, and the much
ballyhooed entry of the rice burners, who haven't done ANYTHING
from an OEM standpoint, and only a little more from their aftermarket proponents. Can you imagine what the financially
strong, incredibly devoted to high perf corporate culture Mercury
would come out with if they were actually challenged by someone?!
So when will I consider buying a Johnrude? If I ever get passed by
one! Possible? yes, likely NO:rolleyes: !!!!!
Once you go BLACK, you'll never go back....................
Regards,
Steve;)

Wow the brand loyalty is really strong around here.I run em both omc makes some good stuff too dont think things you see on mercs didnt come out of competition just think in the mid 70s the omc v4s were really coming into their prime the v6 was the next logical step for omc not for merc. The omc 3 cyl was first prop exhaust, omc was first looper, omc first with external secondary coil ignition, ,first with crank seal ring set up all stuff merc now uses too.I Dont think their first v6 having all this omc derived design on it was ot of the blue engineering .Look at the trim units on all v6s today sure look alot like the original omc integral design, yamaha might just as well have stold the molds from omc. As for hipo stuff the 80s werent that long ago when i seem to remember the fastest boats in the world were omc f1 v8 powered.Im not bashing the mercs I like my 2.5s they run great ,I like my 3.0 omcs too.Omc has contributed alot to the industry over the years as far as technology goes, if not for them merc might have made them tower things for alot longer who knows . If i have any brand loyalty its to us made stuff lets hope omc /bombardier does well and keeps the jobs and competition here at home. Dave

My late friend Ian Backe once showed me an old V6 Merc block
I think I remember it had blocked of enties for piston skirt intake...
It was a development from a German car engine Daf/audi/Wolfsburg or something...
Am I right?
Thanks

If it is white, it has to be right :D

If it is black, you'd better take it back ;)

Yea, yea, I guess we will just have to see.

A life expectantcy....on a Merc nicklesel block it is 50 hrs to change rings...right?

3x50=150...and I bet it would be at least double of that:eek:

H2OPERF, I think your right on, especially on the Yammi's!
