View Full Version : Opinions on 1979 Sandollar
Hi I am new to this forum and need a little help! I am looking at purchasing a Jet boat and came across a 1979 20' Sandollar with a panther drive (no jet-o-vator) and a 454 with over the transom Bassetts trailer included for $4,500. I am a former automotive machinist so the engine doesnt mean much, yes it seems fine and the boat reportadly runs 65mph. My problem is I have not had a small boat in 20years my former boat was a 16' Rayson craft v-drive we put a Big block chev in with a 6-71 blower and casale drive. What is a Sandollar in ok condition worth?? Seats are on last legs, exterior is pretty good, the hull has a area ahead of the jet intake that is not completely smooth (repair??) owner doesnt know. What does hook in a hull look like and what is it from? My plans for the boat are to use it for this season and clean it up over the winter and install a turbine in place of the BBC (I have a line on a T58).
Best Regards
Matt:confused:
P.S.
Anything you can tell me about Sandollar boats would be appreciated I cant find much on them!

I've not seen Sandollar included in any list of "high performance" boats.
The basic shape of a boat bottom (as viewed from the side) will likely be "straight" (desirable), "rocker" (like it sounds...similar to the shape of the rocker part of a rocking chair)....if excessive will cause boat to porpoise, and "hook" (hook is the opposite of rocker)....causes boat to act as if it's glued to the water if excessive can cause the boat to bow steer.
Hook is often the result of improper support during storage, this includes poor fitting trailer bunks. Boats with short stringers are more prone to develop a hook than those with full length stringers.
High performance boat hulls are straight.
I don't know much about Panther pumps, but I have heard it's real difficult to get more than 60 - 65 mph out of one. That would be with an 18' or less boat.
That sounds like a lot of $$$ for a "brand X" boat with a "mediocre" pump, and a hull that needs work (hook) especially considering boating season is over in this part of the world. Then again, I have no idea what part of the world you are in.
Can't say if this boat would have any value for your intended purpose. You didn't say what you're planning. Maybe you think you did....but you didn't.
