Call Rick and tell him the Hi Per thin gaskets , I am at my regular job today and not around a microfish..... I would go up a couple of jet sizes just to be safe... You can always come down but replacing pistons can get alittle pricey....

Rick - if you're following this thread - it seems to be question whether there is thick and thin head gaskets available for the 2.4. Merc parts does list a different part number for Mod-Vp gaskets but I don't know if they have a different thickness or a different construction. Maybe it's just different manufactures happen to have different thicknesses. What do you have?
Thanks -

I need to check present "cold" cranking compression with a hot battery @ WOT and record all 6 holes and forward #'s to you w/ heads. Remove heads & disassemble water cover from two piece. Send old & new head gaskets, and a M.O. Do I got it right?
Rick's sending me ProMarine gaskets # 246-1 Will forward to you with heads.
Thanks

B.MAC

Any chance of making Palatka if I send 'em right out?:D

If the MOD VP gaskets are different, I would like to know this, and what the difference is. Pro Marine only lists one thickness of gasket for the 2.4 for a given application, but they do have 3 different gasket for the 2.5.

P.S. These are list prices, not what S&Fers pay.

Thanks Rick. I never have found different thickness head gaskets for the 2.4, but people seem to think they are out there. I'll e-mail you the two Merc numbers - stock and Mod-VP - but probably tomorrow. That's all I have . No info on what the difference is.

Rick,
Found the info quick. It kind of jumps around between years and models, but a good example is the "high performance 2.4 efi" -
early models with the later two piece heads ---- 27-41246
later models with the same head ------------------ 27-14830
latest models with one piece heads --------------- 27-18350

All the same bolt pattern.

Need help with gaskets for my '85 2.4 200. Looking at the above page of gaskets, are my heads considered 2.4 early, late, or with dowel pins? (These pics are from another post but identical to mine) Thanks for the help.

rukus,

you need the 246-1 later model gaskets due to the bolt pattern but i can tell from the combustion chambers that those are two piece heads with the hour glass shaped covers and those use the 246-1 gaskets, are yours also that type of head? if yours are one piece with that bolt pattern they too use that head gasket ;)

Thanks, that helps to end some of the confusion I've been having in getting a set of gaskets. Thanks for the info and the lesson on identifying the heads. Mine are the two piece heads as you pointed out.
Can't say enough about how great this site is, and how much I've learned from S&F.

Hey Skip,
Since all three part numbers are for the same 2.4 bolt pattern as near as I can tell (not the real early one with the bolts at the liner style), why do you recommend one over the others? Just curious. Any idea what the difference is between them? Maybe just superceeded numbers?

DaveR

as you said the older bolt on the liner patern is the 3872 gasket

the 3871 is the 2.4 with the dowel pin (like the 2.5's) which is the latest 2.4 and actually kinda rare to have

but the 2 piece hourglass heads were the ones just before the one piece heads came out and they both use the 246-1 gasket

What the heck are the 27-14830 and 27-18350 for? My old parts CD says 2.4 late two piece and one piece heads. I always thought except for the early two piece heads, they were all the same - one gasket would fit any head with the late bolt pattern.
