I have seen several references to motors having an " XS " mid section. I know the differences for the lower but am curious if there was a specific difference on the midsection ( other than length) between the XS and a standard short shaft motor of the same era. . Specifically interested in the 850 XS and 1500 XS 1970's vintage.
thanks for the education. Now i only have tu lurn me to spel

The shortshaft mid sections of the 70's (after '72) are the same part number for both 4 & 6 cyl engines. 72 and earlier engines (with the exception of the '72 1400) all had the same bolt pattern. As far as the 850XS and 1500XS, the gearcases would also be identical if it weren't for the fact that the 850 has 2.3:1 gears while the 1500 has 2:1's.

RM - thats what i figured. So when someone claims to have an " XS " mid, it aint nothing special... other than a 15 mid like onthe production motors..

That's correct.................. probably just an easy way to give an accurate description.

My description as an XS mid would be to save the explanation of what it will bolt up to instead of saying it is a shortie mid. Which is exactly what RM said
