I got the lower unit apart on my 79 115 merc last night. I used the method of blocking against the prop nut and working it until the bearing carrier came out.

The cam/foot to the shifter lever looks broken. This lower unit would not fully engage revese.

I am checking the local merc dealer today to see if these parts are in stock.

How do the gears look, specifically the dogs on the inside for engaging the clutch?

I have larger versions of these pics if anybody would like me to email them direct for a better view.

The photos aren't very clear but from what I see you will need to replace them. Those are beat up pretty good.

I would agree with those guys. Those are beat especially the clutch dog ramps. I wouldn't put them back in. Mike

Ditto on the above. The clutch and ramps on gears are toast.

Thanks guys.

Trying to keep the repairs on the cheap side as much as possible. The forward gear ramps are not nearly as bad as the rear. I am replacing the reverse gear, clutch, cam, cam pin, and installing new gaskets, seals, and water pump.

My hope is that will get me through the rest of the season until we can figure what if anything else we will do.

My neighbor down the street has a bass boat with a broken hull (fell off the trailer) that has a 115 Johnson on the back. It has been sitting for two years in her back yard (belongs to her son and she wants it gone) with no trailer. Grass is growing through the floor! She said the motor ran perfect when the boat fell off the trailer and punched a hole in the front.

I told her I would be happy to haul it away if she wants. It would take me a while to get the OMC up to par (I know this merc runs great), then set a plan to transfer the controls and harness to the viper. That is still a long shot, so this lower unit repair will buy me time.
