View Full Version : O Ring heads on a 260?

I have a 96 260 EFI offshore, recently blown up due to a head gasket leak on #6. This motor had only 45 - 50 hours on it, and I'll be damned if I will let my motor go down for the same problem again. Will o ring heads from say a drag or 280 work on this motor? Any problems with this thought?

Thanks in advance for the info.

i have gotten rid of all my o ring heads. i personally do not like them. i think head gaskets are cheap. i like to look in the cyls every now and then anyway. i would stick with good head gaskets and change them out every now and then. you did say you had 50 hours on the engine. i know some guys like the aftermarket head gaskets like pro marine. i always use the mercury ones. i don't know if there is a difference i just like the mercury ones. good luck getting her running again.

Thanks Ben. Are there any better head gaskets than Mercury's? I was sure that this was what I used. I had other motors that 150+ hours on them, with no head gasket problems.??????????????????

i am no expert. of course i have had 200 fishing motors with 300 hours on them not blow a head gasket. the race motors are different beasts. with the rpm they can turn i have seen head gaskets after only a little time. i always say that these motors are expensive and maintance is the only way to not have a rod through the side. like i said i use only the mercury head gasket. this is not to say the others don't work. good luck Ben
