Can anybody help with a temp problem I'm having? I did a search on this topic and the results were overwhelming. Actualy so much that I'm confused.
My engine is a 88 merc 2.4l 200 blackmax, compression 130-140. when I bought the boat the temps were in the 190 - 195 range, water pressure was 23 -26 pounds at w.o.t.2-3 at idle. This temp seemed to be to high so I replaced the thermastats with new ones.{143deg.} The temp at 3000-6000rpm now are at 200-210deg and pressure went up to30psi still 2 pounds at idle. When it runs up that high{temp} I shut the boat down to idle and let it cool. Took the boat out today and ran just washers instead of stats. No different results except pressure went down 4-5 pounds at w.o.t. Then I tried no washers and it didn't help at all, same results as washers. I then took the poppet assembly{spring and diaphram} out. The temp came down to 170-175 at w.o.t with 1pound pressure at idle{pee hole squirting good} and 13lbs at w.o.t. This would seem to be the right temp, but iIs water pressure ok? Is it safe to run without poppet? What do all theese results tell me? Is the poppet bad? I blew all the lines out with air, cleaned inlets holes on nose cone. I don't know if the heads have diverters or not.I'm not sure how much work has been done to this engine internally. I know it's a old topic ,but if anybody could help I would appreciate it!!! Thanks
