From what I've been told, Michael Dixion's white drag boat is either one of the lightest or is the lightest. I'am not sure what it weighs, but it ain't much!

A friend of mine used to get motor work by James Estes at Jumpin Jims Marine I believe and when he went down to his shop in the early 90's James had a superlite STV that he told Bruce he wanted him to drive because it scared James it was so fast,he didn't though.Bruce told me he could see light though the deck in spots and it was supposed to weigh 400#s.thats PDL.
The boat went to texas and was around 400lbs. ive owned a few light ones 450lb drag bottom, 470 sprint deck ski bottom, 500lb rr mod vp bottom, & the one i own now is a tick under 500lb mod vp deck and bottom.

Thats about what mine weighs but there is definitely one that is lighter. It is Triad built and is definitely a one of a kind! I am sworn to keep my mouth shut with numbers but it is alot lighter than mine. Hope I own it one day.:) Hint Hint

To run unlimited with ODBA, I had to get the lead IN.....240 pounds worth. Yeah Blakes boat is along the same lines as mine but the one from deep south is much much lighter. I'm actually surprised that it hasnt showed up at a rally in the last month or so. The owner is also known to usually have plenty of horsepower. Maybe he'll see this and post some pictures...It's one of the best looking STV's I've ever seen.

P.S. If I do ever get rid of it Dixon gets first shot. Wally would'nt let me leave without that deal.

Preston, take some pictures of it. It is without a doubt a work of art. Attention to detail is an understatement. What you using for power?? I bet it would be a bad creature on Alcohol.(especially with about a 250 shot on top of it) Try not to scuff it up too bad:D . Give me a call if you need anything

You got some "splainin" to do about the weight of Barney Boat. RT told me it wans't very light...hmmmm, sneaky Canucks anyway.

I would expect that. But to put things in prospective in 1978 my friend went to High Point to buy a drag boat at the races and returned with a Kurtis 500 runner bottom factory race boat that expired three motors that weekend. The owner pissed about his luck sold it to him for 5K less engine. This boat made some good passes with an injected big block Chevy at 156mph.This hull weighed 375#s bare.I'm not certain Kurtis would confirm that either but this boat was stolen and stripped.I ended up with the bare hull 5 yr's later and weighed it with the guy I sold it to.We took it to Benkins Movers scale and to keep from having to take the boat off, come back and weigh the trailer we picked the boat up off the trailer and put it on the scale. All Im sayin is 400#s is not impossible.

I know back several years they had to be right at 400 when modvp did not yet have a weight minimum as we had 20 footers that were right at 450 and when they instituted a 1250 minimum they had to add weight and a merc on one of mine for Fred Bowden was 1260.

Didn't you race or have an entery in the IGOP races in Jacksonville years ago? There was a blue tunnel v that had an Omc on it that was running up front but it was so rough he had to retire early with some water intrusion from the beating. The boat had a safety cell in it.Those boats were light light light.I think Rusty might have won.Good to see ya postin.

The lightest boat that was raced in mod-vp was Chris Bush's orange boat. It weighed just a touch under 500#. Most of the rest of them were 525 or better. When they put a minimum weight on them most of them went upwards of 575 for rigidity. Now that the cat is out of the bag, the answer to the question is Preston Carpenter's new boat. Up until then, my white boat was probably the lightest. Preston's boat is a one of a kind to say the least.

Yep I will agree on the 525# mark for the majority of the light weights (built by Roark)...if someone claims 400#...there must be part of it missing...like about 1 foot ;)

Anthony, Prestons new ModVP boat is way under 400#. full carbon fiber boat, nothing has been built like this before from what I hear.
Michael Dixon
08-16-2006, 12:46 PM
I think Anthony was referring to the Roarke built boats. Wally has built a few sub 500 boats and several sub 550's. Prestons boat is definitely the lightest and is quite possible a sub 400. Like Anthony said a bunch of people will tell you their boats are sub 450 but in my opinion Preston's is the only one(STV) And it took a lot of work and planning to keep it that light. Including vacuum bagging, carbon fiber, and extensive use of ocumbe. Come on Preston....let's see some pictures of that thing. Got a motor on it yet?? If and when I ever get it:rolleyes: I wouldnt know whether to race it or put it in my living room!!

Yes Michael....Roark Boats....thanks for the confirmation;)
WOW I just found this thread.
Boat weights, interesting. I have a list that I got and it lists some of the light Triads. What is not on it is Mo Money or Prestons new boat. From my understand the newest light boat is setting new standards of light.
As for the Barney boat, ya it is light....... but more in the 540 range. It's rigged weight is pretty light, and I probably could take more out ( maybe another 15 lbs ) of it's rigging, but it is a lake boat used every weekend.
I have heard all the stories of the ultra light boats, and I saw just recently what I am told is the lightest to ever come from Roark at 430lbs.... who told me the weight would know for sure..... and I can tell you this boat is LIGHT.
Another thing to consider is for backwoods outlaw short track light is king, but for the quarter you want something that will hold it's shape, no twisting or power hooking. And anyclass that has rules you need to add weight anyhow, so why not have a stiff boat? which can be in the 550 range or A LOT of carbon and be lighter.
COOL thread!

Maybe I could get Wally to build me a light one...how much do you think it would cost?

09-14-2006, 12:12 PM
I would say a 525-550 custom built with lots of kevlar stringer boat would be around $24,000 and full blown one off 400# carbon boat would be $30k+.
That is if you could get him to do it.

My POS weighs supposedly 560 lbs. bare. It was built with the DRX lay-up process, it contains okume wood. Maybe Wally can comment. I wonder how this compares to Preston's new boat in terms of the build process. The last rocket I owned (Jim Morris' old boat) that I sold to Pirogue came in I believe @ 525. Any comments Jim?

Pete, I certainly wouldn't call your boat a POS. That's still the best looking STV I've ever seen a picture of! Not taking a thing from any of the others but that boat of yours is beautiful!! I would feel the same way about that boat as Michael D. was saying about Prestons boat---I'd have to figure a way to fit your boat in my living room!! Mike T.

So , What things are different ? Did Wally change design, supports, coring ? or just materials , and lamination ?
Lance
it is a carbon boat with almost no fiberglass with epoxy resin and vacuum bagged.
