Help...we just bought a 20' deep-v with a 1978 Black Max on it. We are trying to mount a jack plate on it (manual with 5.5" setback) but my mechanic is running into several issues.
The original black max's had the trim/tilt hydraulics run thru the transom via hollow bolts that also acted as lower secures. Can anyone give us some info on how they modify these to mount the motors on jack plates so the power tilt/trim work?
Also this boat has a deep and narrow motor well. The steering cable comes out on the starboard side of the well. With the engine set back the cable will no longer fit thru the tilt tube. Does anyone make a steering attachment for the engine that will allow the cable to still run straight out of the well and run thru the adaptor?
Hard to explain...hope I gave you enough info.
Thanks
Greg

You'll want to eliminate the small hoses at the rear of the clamp and connect right to the junction block between the trim cylinders. I've been looking at this for a project of my own. I think you can substitute a set of the old inline trim hoses to do this, but hose length may be a problem. The easiest solution would be to contact Billy (screen name The Hoser) here on the board. Pretty sure at the engine side you need a 3/8-24 SAE inverted flare, with the larger fitting being 7/16-24.
The steering setup will present the biggest headache, there's no adapter I'm aware of to fix that problem(hopefully someone else will have an idea) other that to reroute the cable.
One more thing you may not realize. That engine uses a pretty long tuner, so on a boat with a lot of deadrise, the end of the tuner may be underwater at idle speed. It can make the engine a little harder to start, and idle rougher than normal, which was a constant annoyance for me. Some guys have added relief holes to the tuner and seemed happy with the results.

I sent a message to The Hoser....see what happens. Still looking for some input on the steering cable situation.

LOOK AT BENTROCK marine( merc T@T parts) And there is serveral length for Mercury trim hoses. I am going to have to do the same to one of my blk max when I add a jackplate > don't use the old lower mnting bolts like a friend of my did > He put silicon to fill the tube through the mnting bolt and filled the boat up !!!!! quality h20
