Hey Guys,

I'm just about ready to begin removing my floor, stringers & transom from my 1986 RedLine (Challenger splash) & am in need of a motor stand for my 1986 Yamaha 200hp OB. Any recommendations? Would a typical automotive engine stand with two pieces of 3/4" plywood bolted to it suit my purpose?

Thanks,
Dan

do a search, there is a lot of discussion on this. I built one, could send you a picture if you want. I also have a car engine stand that works well also.

The cheapie 1000 lb capacity stand, sold by the chain auto parts stores has a perimeter frame at the bottom leaving the middle open, and also an upright that can be mounted backwards to be closer to a transom angle. Sam's usta' sell one in that configuration manufactured by Carolina Tool if I remember.

Here's the stand you need. (engine not included:D )

That stand is Summit Racing's SUM-G1014 which is rated at 1250 lbs. Reversing it for proper angle for an outboard is simple at assembly time, and requires no motifications. In the reversed position the rating may be less than 1250 lbs, but certainly enough to support any outboard, and at $73.95 delivered, plus a piece of scrap wood to mount the engine, it's cheaper than you can build one. I've got about 8 or 10 of em now with several holding pairs of inline 6's.

I got the HD black ones at PEP boys and my Merc 2.5's fit nicely on them.

Got mine at Advance Auto. Then made a mount adapter out of 2X8's in a staggered aray. 2X12's would be better.

The reason I like the Summit stand is that the bottom is perimeter, and doesn't have a center beam running under the skeg. That means the engine can be mounted about 8 inches lower, which makes it a lot less tipsy. Also, the center beam stands tend to have a shorter width on the outer two wheels than the perimeter type, which makes em more tipsy also.

My dad made one out of some 2x4s and all you need to do is take off the lower unit to work on it ( dad is short )

I made my own and they take up much less space. Also you can run the motor on them. I have several and just connect the controls, battery, and gas to it hit the key and you have a test run stand.

I'm in the process of building one, will post photos once it is together. Materials cost $78 at Menard's.
