I just had a 1999 Mercury Optimax 225hp installed on my boat and was told that it was a 20" shaft. After installation and closer inspection (I know this is my fault for taking their word instead of checking myself) it is actually a 25" shaft. I now have to run the boat with the jack plate fully lifted and the boat still does not lift properly.

Can anyone tell me the rough costs to convert the motor to a long shaft (20")? Or would it make more sense to find someone with a 20" looking to upgrade to a 25" and simply swap them out?

Thanks for your help.

Just a thought but some of the setback brackets have some positve lift. If you are close you may be able to get the engine up higher without running out of room on the jackplate. I know on mine I had to mount the setback bracket upside down to get the motor low enough into the water.
