working in a thompson i.o. n got no clue what the frick motor is in it,it's a 4-cyl.,and sea ranger is the model of the BOAT but no way to tell what motor is in it,its a 89,assuming it's a 2.0 or a 2.5 chevy, but not able to find vin numbers on the block or tags ANYWHERE been ALL OVER the net looking for thompson boats n getting no-where,needing the correct motor for parts i'm at the point where i'm thinking on ordering a carberator rebuild kit, cause there's no fuel restrictions ANYWHERE else, checked from the tank-pickup to the check-valve to the feul pump,(which is mechanical)took that apart and cleaned all the passages,n wanting to replace the fuel filter in that even but not able to without identifying the motor litre n ect.brand even, took the plugs down to auto-zone and had em check back (as much as possible)from model number on plugs (assuming it was probably a chevy n got no imput there even just new plugs.WHAT THE FRICK?,there's mer-cruiser tags on the block but nothing to do with the engine itself, bout ready to install a 502 in the p.o.s. n be done with it.identifying this would be greatly appreciated guy's:cool:

Try BAM offshore they have a website that list all motors by years maybe thru process of elimination.

Not sure, sounds like a 3.0 Mercruiser! Got a pic and I'll tell you for sure, all the searays that come here have them in them and yes it's a GM block.

M/C didn't have a 2.0 Liter, only 2.5 and 3.0 Liter 4 bangers during that time. A 502 will trash the outdrive is very short order. Look on the bellhousing flange on the block on either side of the engine for a mettal tag riveted to the block. Normally there is a decal on the spark arrestor that specifies which motor it is and there is suppose to be a sicker for the engine SN# along with the Outdrive and transom assembly SN#'s on the arrestor cover.

+1 for the 3.0 Mercruiser 4 cylinder. No idea on any specifics though.

If it looks like a f-e Ford head & if it stinks like a Ford it is a 470.

i got to the bottom of it (this afternoon)at a auto-parts store that was able to crossreference the mer-cruiser parts,so a new fuel pump is in order, looks like its a 2.5,more than likely,We got the right fuel pump from the filter installed in it though,so things should be good.:D

Interesting statement. The 470 used a 460 head and last I checked the 460 was a 385 series engine. FEs were 332, 352, 360, 390, 410, 406, 427 and 428.

The 2.5 and 3.0 used the same fuel pump, distributor and water pump along with the same alternator.

that's whats up-no-doubt,got the new fuel pump on it and got it running fine,(replaced the fuel line 2),its getting hot quick though, temp made it up over 200 pretty quick,(what the)that was on the hose but that's gotta be the only cooling for the engine right?it's got coolant in it but i'm thinking that's just for the exhaust header n what-not right?i did notice that the coolant level did'nt drop in the resivior (when it was running)this thing aint got a stat and a water pump does it?

trying to get this thing outtta here and back to the owner as soon as possible, got the coolant straightened out,it does have stat n water pump and the whole engine is cooled with anti-freeze,whe'll,got it filled up with anti-freeze n that fixed it,took it out n it was doing great,(i'm thinking done deal at that time)so then i trim it out n hammer it for a short time (just to make sure it's a fixed right deal)(knowing it will get put through that at some point n time anyway)n low n behold it floods and dies out,i'm thinking ooohh sh$t the floats just stuck,(by the way its a manchester 2 barrell)so i pinch the fuel line with vise grips n w.o.t. to start it (cause it flooded)and it starts n run's about 2 min's n dies,so then i smack the side of the carb n choke it (without the vise grips)n it starts n runs bout another 2 min's,then floods out again,WHAT THE FRICK?,so float home and take the top plate off the carb (to get to the float assembly n (thinking)free it up,and check everything else out while i'm in there and as far as the eye can see looks ok,re-assemble and it floods out hard again,so i'm at a loss at this time,my best bet would be,the vacum on the fuel pump moved and stuck the diaphram at maximuim flow, but it could still be the carb itself, but, theres a passage (in the top of the carb by the fuel inlet)thats flowing out fluently with gas so i'm thinking it's getting overfed with fuel from the pump and the passage that i'm seeing fuel flow from is a releif from it getting overfed with feul pressure, anyone heard of that one?like i say WHAT THE FRICK? all this over a simple changeover.

alright (after further thought),i was thinking no matter what the fuel pressure is (pretty much) the flloat valve should only let needed fuel in,so,took the carb back apart n (by the way it's a rochester),n the float needle assembly was loose so gas musta been pouring in around the threads (ge,wonder why i did'nt think of that)what the frick?anyway put the peice of crap:D back together again and its fine.done deal.
