my uncle has a 19 ft ebbtide with a 4.6 mercruiser in it. whenever you take it out of gear and put it back into neutral, it will want to stall. the rpm's drop to somewhere around 400 i think. 50% of the time, the engine will stall out. i've tried raising the idle, lowering the idle, and tried adjusting the throttle cables. once it was in forward and we couldnt get it back in neutral. are the throttle cables crap, or is there a trick to it?
any imput much appreciated!

see if it got a shifting cut out. if so the switch maybe sticking. this will shut the motor off for too long a time.

what is a shifting cut out, and where is it located?

there is a shifting plate that is mounted on the exhaust elbow.it has two cables, on from the control box and one from the drive. there is a switch on the plate with the engine running in neutral pess the swith and see if the engine wants to stall. if the switch does nothing then it need's to be replaced.if it works ok then there is a problem in the drive cable or the drive itself.

if the switch is bad mercury has discontinued the old style switch. there is a new kit availible with everything you will need to retrofit.hope this helps.
