my ole lady really likes the idea of a swim platform and an engine hatch to chill out on. I like the Progression 22, she would rather have a progression 24 LD with an I/O.

Both boats will fit the bill for me, just wondering what the fuel consumption diff would be.

250-300 outboard vs 496-502 I/O ??

Best to talk to Progression, since they could easily answer that. :)

I'd like to hear too. I have some assumptions tho.

Ummmm....Hello. The 24LD OutBoard models have a swim platform/ cushion package......http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/3110/sarollma9.gif (http://imageshack.us)

I have run both inboards and outboards. (My outboard experience is just this year) If you look at cubic inches/litres vs. fuel economy your inboards will probably do better.

Ex.) I have a 225 2.5L(not an opti motor) outboard that will burn 40 gallons of gas in 6 hours of moderate to hard use. (40/6)/2.5= 2.66 gallons per litre per hour.

I had a 454Mag (7.4L) that would burn 65 gallons of gas in 6 hours of moderate to hard use. (65/6)/7.4= 1.46 gallons per litre per hour.

These were two very different hulls. The outboard hangs on a 21' open bow and the I/O was on a 28' closed bow. I do believe the outboards tend to be a little thirstier but they also have a very impressive HP to weight ratio. Outboards will run higher rpms too(one reason for thirst)

Good luck hopefully someone can produce some real life #'s on similar/same hulls.

Well, first of all, the outboards DO have a sun lounge but the I/O pad is quite a bit bigger. I think there may be too many factors to definitively answer this question but I use about 12gph at 3000 RPM and run right about 49 MPH at that speed. There is a rather large difference in weight between a 24 I/O and a 22 O/B so I expect that the Opti motors would yield better fuel economy than that. After rereading your post I think a 24 outboard would be a good compromise.

Thanks guys, I think you have pointed me back towards the outboard. Its all in do time anyway, everytime I go to buy a boat something comes up (House, Baby, Car, Etc).

I prefer the smaller boat and the outboard and felt it would have better fuel economy. Sounds like overall that is the case.

I think the i/o motor needed to maintain max CRUISE speed with the o/b will be very thirsty and very expensive with less service life.I also think that if I bought a Progression it would be for the long haul due to the quality of the boat.At the 10 year mark I think a well cared for one will be a very desireable boat with a new 400 hp o/b on the back. Will we even be able to get a new production big block in 10 years to put in front of that old outdrive?

get a boat like superbash posted with twin 200xs. you get 400hp with the best fuel economy on the market for large motors. plus with the exterior motor mount the best looking half can have the sun deck. im getting 7.4 mpg with the 200xs on a 20' voyager.
