Hey gang.

Over on our site we were eyeballing this eBay listing which is supposed to be an old center steer Check with a Merc Twister.

The seller says the motor is an inline six Merc Twister that puts out 350 HP. The cowel seems to illustrate that the motor is a 1500XS.

Does anyone know what this motah actually is?

I sent him an E Mail. He seems like a nice guy and just made a typo on the horsepower that he hadn't caught. He said he was told it was a Twister and that's why he posted that in the description. Although it is shortshaft, I didn't catch the ADI ignition until later, so it's definately not an XS. I'm not sure from the picture what that gearcase laying in the boat is, but one thing for sure that it IS NOT is an XS unit. So what we have is a short mid, an XS cowl, a later ADI type powerhead of unknown horsepower, and an unknown gearcase on a boat that needs restoring.

He explained that it is a short mid, but knows nothing of the motor specs or numbers, but can get them. I think it'll go for a lot more than I want to spend for the motor. Just what I need is another project hull sittin in the barn:rolleyes:

Well not to be the skeptic, but he knows well enough that the boat with a twister is worth quite a bit. ;) So I gather he knows that without one it isn't worth a hill of beans. :D

That's my Twister and that picture was harvested from somewhere on this website. I still have the engine. It now powers an engine stand and may very possibly be the lowest hours, most original one in existence. The original owner, who I bought it from said it had less than 10 hrs, his daughter, with him at the time corrected him that it more likely had less than 5.

Not a problem with me.

I was just showing that motor off today to an old Merc racer (who might not want to admit to associatin' with me:o ). I think it's my favorite as far as my stuff goes, or at least one of em, because of it's condition and history. You just can't restore worn out stuff to that condition regardless of effort, and so many little nit pick parts, markings, wraps, etc get lost in the process. I wish one of the T2's was in half that nice a shape.

That midsection is the older, external trim ram type.

Norris, I remember that photo - from one of the first boat features we did here :)

No question on the shorty. In the case of an inline, when the lower shock mounts line up with the lower motor mounts on the mid, then it's a shorty.

Yep, all the shorties were external trim ram.

Yep, I remember it too. Should've kept that boat, not because I liked it much when it was wet, but because it was absolutely brand new..........a time capsule. Ahhhh, to have unlimited storage one day.

Guy is in no hurry to change the description of twister on it. The checkmate sticker is the same as the one on my '73 hull also. I dig the hurst shifter though.

There is a boat for sale up here with a std inline on it, just south of newaygo. I was going to stop and take a pic but ran out of time. I'm sure someone here has seen it by now, its bright red and looks really sharp from the road. I don't know what it is, that really bugs me. The front deck is flat, its wide and low, and in the rear the sides are rounded outwards. I've seen a lot of jet boats like that but not a smaller outboard hull. Its not a checkmate or 'stream.
