Son, you are going faster than you should be already with that much power.

I know but I want to go faster.

I'm building a funcat now, hasn't hit the water yet. I pulled the deck off, cut out the floor in each sponson and took all the water soaked foam out of it. Put in a new transom, 2 sets of stringers down each sponson (full length), added 6 bulkheads and a new fully glassed floor. Just about ready to glass the deck back onto the boat. There is also carbon fiber strategically placed throughout the boat. Dash and floor are done in blue kevlar/carbon and left clear. Also built a center console with offshore throttles so the kid can drive and I can throttle (that I do have a pic of).
For power we're using a slightly worked Stinger on a 6" cmc hyd jack plate, nitro gearcase with a bobs cone. Should be wet in 2 weeks. Figure a month or so to get the balance right and find the right prop. Will probably have Ron Hill build a 4 or 5 blade cleaver for it.
I'll take pics tonight.

what do you think you will get out of it speed. Just put a 24 laser on my 75 today, much better it brought my rpms down to 5250 from 6200. Going to try a 24 chopper tomorrow.

The first runs will be with a 12 3/4 x 18 chopper but I am spinning to 7800rpm. What speeds are you running, want to get an idea of the prop slip so I can better calculate where I might be. I was figuring 12% should bring me very close to 60mph. Probably goin to need a 21 but I want to go with a 4 blade cleaver. Let me know how the chopper runs.

Take that black motor off and put a 56 ci orange motor:eek: ;)

You get what you get with the 75 and it just won't get the gains you could with the other motor, but just my .02

I have a '77 shorty and a '83 long shaft hanging on the rack 'cause I like Mercs ;)

Did you run the chopper?

evilntwisted
07-27-2006, 01:21 PM
Yes I did its a 24p and my rpms went back up to 5550 to 5600 and now I am running 63 mph. Now if I hit the smallest wake and the back of the boat looses bite the boat will jerk to the right so fast it wants to spit you out. I am doing everything I can to keep it straight with one also. I need hydraulic steering now. I am thinking about trying a cleaver now

I am jumping between this boat and my vegas xt playing the prop game. Got the xt to 76 last night with a 25 4blade, goint to try the 29 today.

So it looks like the chopper is the wrong prop, damn that's what just came in the mail today from Ron Hill. Looks like I need to order up that cleaver asap. Just need to run the boat once and make sure of the pitch. My initial thought was a 5 blade cleaver, looks like that is going to be the ticket on this little boat.

How much trim do you need? I took 3/16 of hook out of the bottom of mine, hoping I can get the cg right to carry the bow with very little trim.

You in NJ? I'm down in Monmouth Beach.

If i trim it any more than about neutral, thats when it starts to get a little skechy and there is no room for error with the waves or the throttle.

I just bought one of these and will be playing with the setup. Got a 70hp merc on it. Where is you propshaft in relation to the bottom of the boat ? Is your 6" plate power or manual ? Do you have any pics of the setup/interior/trim buttons/etc.

thanks

Oh, and what pitch prop do you think I should be running ? Is your old 19p stainless gonna be for sale ?

When mine had the 45 on it the prop shaft was even with the bottom of the sponsons, although not fast it seems very predictable. The new setup with the Stinger is on a hyd jack plate. I haven't run the boat yet but thinking an 18" prop since the motor spins up to 7800 rpm. Once things get close I will have either Ron Hill or Dewald build a 5 blade cleaver for it. I don't have the switches in yet, was just cutting the holes for the gauges and wanted to see how it will look. The trim switches will be in the console next to the throttle. The interior is totally different than stock. I'll be painting the boat this week, then I can get it rigged. Should be in the water by the weekend.

I am running a 24 chopper now and I got 63 the other night still turning 5600 rpms. I am going to try a 25 cleaver and see what happens. The boat still jumps rite out of the water when I start off, so we will see.

Where is your prop in realation to the bottom of the boat ? Or do you have a jackplate ??

Was looking at my propshaft today. It's almost even with the bottom of the tunnel. I'm thinking it's way to high for a fixed setup. The boat won't plane off....it will cavitate as soon as the bow drops and falls back off plane.

I just bought a jackplate off ebay. maybe this will help get the prop lower when planning.

Propshaft even with the bottom of the tunnel? Are you sure, that is way too high. When I got mine the transom was built up 6" higher than stock and that put the prop shaft even with the bottom of the 2 sponsons. If you're going to run high you'll need a cleaver or a chopper, trash that stock prop for sure.

Same thing with this....they modified and extended up the transom bracket to raise the motor. they went up like 10 inches. I think it must have had a short shaft motor on it originally, and then they half-a$$ rigged it to try to make this motor work. Here is a picture of the transom. Can't really tell from this angle, but the shaft is pretty close to the bottom of the tunnel...I noticed this when i looked closer at it yesterday, but forgot my camera.

Bottom of the tunnel = Bottom of the sponsons. Sorry I never heard it that way before. Bottom of th sponsons is perfect although you'll need to dump the alum prop for sure. It will be a bear to get on plane and the prop will blow out just as you hit the perfect trim. Here is the old transom and what I did it when I rebuilt the boat. Yes, that is carbon fiber on the top of the transom  3rd pic is the boat just after the first coat of clear yesterday.

This is what I'm talking about in relation to the bottom of the tunnel (RED LINE).

Like I said, you can't tell from the angle of the pic, but when I put my head eye level with the prop shaft, it was pretty close to the RED LINE.

Is this Mr. Velocity from OSO ? think we've met a few times at D&B gatherings.

Thanks, my kid wanted the boat painted exactly like the boat I raced (36 Skater). I am having a tough time finding a lower unit for it, it is becoming a real nightmare. I need to wet sand the boat and shoot the clear again, got a little orange peel. Just picked up the tank today, hopefully will be rigging the boat over the weekend into next week. Over the winter I want to switch mids and put a 15 on it, so I'll be cutting the transom back down.

Yea, that's me from oso as well, on yahoo too. Been using that since '98 when I got the big white chip.

What's happening there? Not really sure, supposed to go to the skiff races this Sat then have the big skiff rally on the 23rd. Haven't run the boat yet, just finished up today will probably spash on Wed. Have an 18" chopper I am going to start with to see if I can spin up to 7800rpm. If its running well I'll let you know about the 16th.
