I have a 1992, 130 V4 Yamaha. Winterized 2 months ago and now it will not start. The engine cranks fine, yet I have no spark at the plugs. Batteries are fully charged. Lanyard is attached at kill switch. People have said that the CDI box is the problem. Anyone have any thoughts? Is there anything that I can check myself before I have to take the rig to the shop?

Thanks.

Start by checking all wiring on the motor and the ones to the
control box.Sometimes it can be varmits or just a bad connection.

first thing to do is disconnect kill wire under hood. it is a small plug in wire. that eliminates the key switch and the kill switch. remove plug wires and ground spin so if it fires it will not crank

1. If you do not have a service manual, get one and check the wiring and the CDI box per the instructions in the service manual.

2. To me, the stator is the prime suspect if the wiring is OK. (My stator went bad a couple of years after it had been hit by a flywheel coming off a broken crank due to an incompentent mechanic and I had the same problems)

a) Are you sure that the starter is revving high enough?

b) If you take out some plugs, do you then get spark on those cylinders? (Make sure you ground things properly and that you do not stick any body parts in the spark plug gap when checking)

It sounds like a weak battery. Even though it turns over, if it does not spin fast enough, it won't fire. Gap testers will not often work for testing on a Yamaha for fire. Hook a charger to it and see if it fires.
