hello

i have 1971 65 hp merc.
on a 14' check mate like boat

I would like to get a jack plate (manual),the one available here is a 8'' setback. Will this work or is it to much set back?(The motor does not have power trim.)

My prop is a 2 blade bronze 19'' pitch with no cup(The prop is gonna be cupped soon)

ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREAT!!!!

Hi BoatR,

My dad runs that identical motor on a 15' Pacecraft (400 lb. copy of a 15' Allison with a step in the pad), and I would definitely say that 8" is not necessary and adds more weight than it's worth. In fact he doesn't run any setback, it's a long shaft motor on a 21" transom and he just has it jacked up 3.5" with a homemade aluminum jackplate that he had welded up. With the right prop you should not have a problem with bowlift. You can fine tune the manual tilt motors by getting different pipes and putting them around the tilt pin if you need it to be on the "third and a half hole" or whatever.

Is your motor short or long shaft? If it is a short shaft, you might have problems with the clamp screws clearing the transom, if it is a long shaft you'll probably be able to raise it high enough for them to clear. Mounting a clamp-on motor to a modern jackplate takes some jury rigging as you're probably aware. 8" of setback would probably clear the screws regardless of height, but I really think that is too much. If I had to take a wild guess I'd say 3" - 4" would be plenty.

I can send you a picture of my dad's setup if you want. It's just two aluminum plates, on on either side of the transom and bolted in place, with a wood block squeezed between them. The front plate has to V shaped braces welded on it, one under each clamp screw.

Thanks for the info. My question is ..Will the boat get on plane with 8" of set back. The person who sells jack plates has only in stock an 8" jack plate. He deals with big outboards, he thinks that with 8" setback is possibly too much and that the 65 hp wont have the power to plane ,because it pushes down on the transom.

It probably won't. most V-pad boats that fly don't like to plane and need a whale tail to plane out and lots of negative trim. being that you can't trim it, you better off not going that far back. look around and get a small fixed plate, last i looked i think they are about $35 or something.
