View Full Version : How do you say NO without being an azz?

Since I have a boat with a back seat now, I get asked ALL THE TIME for rides in my Quartershot.
Its unreal, I get Mom's asking for me to take their kids for a ride, boyfriends wanting me to take their girlfriends for a ride, (they don't know me to well, do they?), and always the drunk guys wanting a ride.
With the price of gas, and the cost of a new motor if I break it giving them a ride,(because they all want to go "wide open"), I don't want to be a "puppet" that dances at their request, (or the pony ride at the Fair).
Some I do give rides to, and the Girlfriends........well......hummmmm
How do you say NO without being an azz, and putting a damper on an otherwise up beat, and fun atmosphere, that we have going on in the group?
Most of these people are complete strangers that ask for rides...........
tell them no lifeline no ride.
If it is a girlfriend, tell them she does not have to have a lifeline but the only safe place is kneeling under the dash ;) ;)

It's funny you mention this right now. I had my boat in the water on the fourth. My brother came over with about 6-7 people and told them I would take them for rides. I usually don't mind, but after a couple rides its got real old. I did it this time but I pulled my brother aside and told him if he wants me to give rides then cover some gas. I think people dont realize how much gas these things burn when you standing on them. If I really don't want to give rides, I usually tell people that I'm low on gas. Later, Dave

What I tell them, I can't print here, but people expect that from me.
You could use the insurance excuse.

I saw a bumper sticker that said: "Ass, gas, or grass.......... nobody rides for free". Stick wunna' them on both sides of the boat and that oughta cover it.
tell em joe's giving free rides and let him deal with it!

When I had my jet ski I'd get the same thing all the time. Usually just said no very politely. If they argued with me I had two responses, "funny how you were nice up till you didn't get what you wanted." or "see all these people, that's a lot of rides to give it I started with you".

"This boat runs on gas, NOT thanks"

I've tried several..........
like....."speed cost money, how fast do you wanna go?"
They said, "I've got money"........ so that didn't work to well, $5 or $10 wont cover a broke motor.........or hardly pay for gas and oil.
I thought about saying, " you got a hundred dollar bill?", but that still comes off as being an azz.
Keep in mind that these are usually complete stangers.
I also thought about the insurance thing, that seems the best so far, but they might say, "Don't worry, I wont sue you if anythng happens"............YEA RIGHT
It happens ALL THE TIME.

Your just too nice.... Don't go wide open and hurt the engine!! Consider putting small letters on your boat, "10 min rides 10.00" (you decide actual cost) , just cruise along at 50 then when someone asks for a free ride, point out the sign to them :) You may not ever have to come out of pocket for beer or gas again!!
BTW...... Can I get a free ride this weekend?

Sure you can Jennifer !
Oh, by the way, I didn't start this thread over the Sebrina incedent, I dont really mind rideing pretty women...........(pun intended)
my friends wanna ride, but nobody wanna go flat-out, they start screaming around 40knots.
funny how the guys helping me build and rig the boat also gets first when rideing huh? ;)

Sebrina won't be riding with us either, not sure what David was thinking there! Feel free to ask me about it sometime, but lets just say she has been removed from the "approved" riding list. Personally I think he gives too many free rides, especially when you consider its my boat!

and I got over it:p ...But seriously the legal liability is the big kicker, and that goes beyond what is or isn't considered as generosity and a boat ride... These things are pretty safe especially with a responsible driver but anything can happen, and alot of people really look forward to that "anything" circumstance.. Think about what the accident would look like in a Courtroom, you would be lunchmeat all the way in their eyes... The Lifeline is another reason that just an anybody doesn't ride, I wear one because I value My well being and that's a good enough reason for then to cough one up also... Gas $ and engine longevity come in as the least important, but not unimportant..

Just say.."sorry, I'm low on fuel..maybe next time". That works for kids/people with no money or it may spur someone to offer cash.

I actually enjoy giving rides just to show people how cool these boats really are. One at a time would suck though. I generally try to get a many gals as possible to go on the ride. I never go wide open though. Part throttle in these boats gives most people a huge thrill while still being safe for them and the motor. When I get tired of it, the low gas excuse generally works for me.

say NO THANKS. If that doesn't work be an azz!

Since when is stating what you want being an azz? What about these people infringing upon you? To ask someone you don't know for a ride in their boat without offering anything is being an azz.
Feel bad if you want to; that's your choice not theirs...

new story to tell..............film at 11:00
Sorry, I ran out of time at last break, but wanted to bring this back to top, (it took my the last break to find it)
Same type deal, the drunk chick, (not to drunk) wanted a ride. (her husband in the boat beside me, we are floating in the river)
I said, "I don't really like to give rides"
Bla bla bla, it went on for a while, all the time I am saying NO.
That doesn't work, so I go for the ole, "I don't have insurance"
Husband says, "I have ins."
"I don't think that willl cover this situation"
bla bla bla, on and on, and I am STILL saying NO, (trying to not be an azz)
Next thing I know, the drunk sife jumps off of their boat, and is swimming towards my boat.
I am still saying NO.
After about 6 tries to get onto my boat, she finally makes it up on the side, (Quartershot), and still trying to be lite hearted, I say "watch this" as I put my hand on top of her head, (like I'm gonna push her off the boat) but I didn't.
She climbs into the back seat.........WHAT PART OF NO DIDN'T SHE UNDERSTAND ??????
I yell over to here husband, (I know them, but not to well), "well she's in the boat, what am I supposed to do now ??
Needlesss to say, she got her ride, but DAMN, how do say NO any plainer??
To make matters worse, when I came back to where we were stopped at,
they were GONE, (she's cute, but not that pretty, I know what you are
thinking, but she did have NICE projectiles) (that should have been the
payment, but then I might would have had to fight her husband back at the beach)
So....I had to take her back to the dock, (about 5 miles in the WRONG direction)
Do you get just plane UGLY with them, and be a total AZZ HOLE, or what??
NO deffinatly didn't work this time......I must have said NO 5 or more times.

this will work if the people don't know you: smile real big and simply say NO SPEAKA ENGLISH! All the illegals use that tactic around here. lol

I think on that situation, a plain old "WHAT PART OF NO DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND!" would have been acceptable. I don't mind giving rides to friends but hell no am I giving some stranger a ride in my boat. I can't believe people you don't even know have the balls to ask.

Yeah , that and the resultant liability exposure from anything that could happen in any boat .

I tell them the flamer costs $2.00 a mile in gas. At WOT, that's a buck every 15 seconds! It gets 1.5 mpg. Then I just tell them it's a liability thing being that everyone sues.
Everyone asks "how fast" when I tell them, they usually say "not with me in it" My point exactly!
