View Full Version : tie bar fell off at 75 mph
my tie bar on my 23 daytona un screwed itself at 75 mph with 6 in the boat nothin happened except the steering was funny the boat turned right felt like prop blow out i would hate to have that happen at 100 so i am thinking of drilling 1 small hole in each end and safety wire the nuts so this dont happen again. 1 hour earlier me and step son were going 100 never knew and i always do a nut/bolt check and a walk around but it was windy and rough out more than normal with the 4th.

Glad to hear nobody was hurt.:D This is why I always buy tiebars that have opposite threads at each end. Its much harder for them to loose their adjustment & come apart as well. The cheaper tie-bar makers use the same thread rod ends, a no-no. I also always put a drop of the "red" Loctite on each of the rod end locknuts. AirRide

I drill a small pilot hole, and put a split pin through the bolt, so the nut can't work past it, easier if you have to take it off then locitite.
they did have opposite ends

I once lost steering cable on my 12' flatbottom boat with a Mark 78 at around 30mph and all I remember is a water tornado and the boat spun on it's transom, luckily I shut it off quickly!Needless to say it now has 2 wire cables. What a ride.

Glad to hear nothing bad happened. Thats always been a worry of mine. I checked my stuff last night. Everything looks good now, but you never know when something will break. As far as 1Bad's comment, don't forget he seems to know EVERYTHING!! J/k. Later, Dave

I kept a small tool box with all the nut and bolt wrench sizes and one big adjustable in my trailer tool box. I checked every one before EVERY run. My tie bar any my wingplate/ram nuts would often loosen.

something didnt BREAK. thats a totally different situation. as far as knowing everything, I never claimed too, but I DO know this simple math equation... :p :D
RED LOCTITE + bolt + (nut x tq²)= no loose nuts

The vibrations and harmonics on two side by side high reving two strokes is insane. Jay Hinz aka "ELI" is one of the best mechanics you will meet. He is always checking his boats for potential problems. So if it happened to him...
I have had the lock nut loosen before on a boat. I agree to use a lot of locktite and using a safety wire can only help.

Glad to hear you made it through Jay. Mine loosened up too. I put some blue loctite on it and may have to go to red or lockwire. I think I will start checking it everytime before I go out now.
I met you when I bought my 25 Cougar and you helped with getting my trailer fixed to get me on my way.
sorry but i dont think i know you must of met a different jay i,m in minocqua.wis. be safe. thanks brad.

Sorry, I thought you were the guy with the 23 Daytona that worked for Quams Boats near Madison Wisconsin.
EDIT: I looked at his card last night. The guy that helped me out in Wisconsin was Scott Reierson - Didn't think there were that many twin engine 23 Daytona's in Wisconsin!

I spin my props out and added a safety cable from motor to motor along the tiebar.I have no idea if it will help or not.

I had my tiebar come off too. At 95. I used blue locktight. Now I use red on everything.
