Well I am between two motors. A 1972 Mercury 402 40 or an Evinrude Super Forty. Not sure on year of the Evinrude but it does not have thru hub exhaust. This is for a 14-foot aluminum johnboat. If anyone is familiar with these motors or could advise which one might be the better outboard I would appreciate. Both motors are advertised as turnkey ready and the Evinrude is slightly more expensive. Thanks again, Naiscoot

That Evinrude is one of the most dependable motors ever built. Few other motors ever rival it's fill the tank and pull the rope reliabilty. Also one of the highest volume motors ever ... next to the 4 cylinder 40/45/50 Merc (you aren't looking at) it may be #1

....I figured I'd use it as a "spare time" project, not thinking that "spare time" is about as rare for me as hitting the lottery. So they are pretty good motors?

Pretty good is probably an understatement

those are really great little motors. classic fifty. have had a few of them in the shop, mostly switch box replacements and carb/water pump jobs. popular pontoon boat motor.

Happy 4th guys.

Well the Mercury I believe is older and a bit cheaper but the owner claims it is turnkey. The Evinrude is a little more money but the current owner is not sure on the year of make. The hood of the engine has Super Forty if that helps at all and it is not a thru hub exhaust which I believe the Mercury is. My Johnboat is rated to 30 horsepower but my mechanic said 40 would be no problem. I am just unsure on a weight difference between the two if any. I believe they are both 2 cylinder. I just want something to pull and go and have been advised that both motors are pretty well made. I was leaning towards the Mercury out of nothing more than unfamiliarity with Evinrudes. But if the Super forty is as good as I have been told maybe I should get it. My mechanic advised me that the Evinrude was the superior motor and the few extra dollars would be well worth it. This is coming from not only a Mercury owner but a dealer and mechanic as well. Once again thanks for all the input much appreciated, Naiscoot <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
