View Full Version : Very Embarrassing Boat Ride!

Many of you have read my old posts as I was restoring this boat for the past 2 years. I have never had 4 people in the boat until yesterday. What a complete disaster!!! The boat was sitting there in the hole. Every time that I tried to climb out, the bow would rise and the stern would sink to a very scary level. I thought we were all going to have to swim. Water would start to pour into the splash well.

I never did get on plane, and my parents in the back seat were scared to death. I have the engine ( Black Max 150 ) jacked up 2 inches below the pad, and bob's nose cone. Trim and tilt seems to have almost no effect on this boat. I know this is not a family boat, but I got passed by a pontoon boat going 30 mph, and my engine was working hard. ( 24 pitch chopper prop, modified Hopkings, cupped )

Is this type of boat supposed to be that bad ( 19 ft. ) I guess the center of gravity is near the front seats. This is my first boat, and I have not been boating that much.

I guess I will have to stick with only 2 people in the boat from now own! It would be nice to take friends out once in a while, but I have to make some kind of changes, bad!!!!!!!

Any suggestions?

my boat does the same thing, put an overhub prop on and or try dropping the engine when carrying peaple.

You need a hydraulic jack plate so you can bury the engine for better take off when loaded then jack it up after you plane. It will also help when towing tubes or skiiers if you do that much.

This is not a loaded question, but did you have it trimmed all the down... Was the motor laboring, or was it the attitude and angle of the boat that was troublesome... I'm with Chynwalker, put an over the hub prop around the 22 pitch range on there and see if it don't improve... It concerns Me to think how low the stern will drop when coming off of plane, if it is so much trouble trying to come out of the hole..

I alwasy had to have the people stand up near the frount seats to get the bow to drop in the vector

My bassboat runs great with me in it, and I can jack the engine pretty high. Add 1 passenger, and it won't run worth a crap, unless I lower the motor. I can trim it up and watch speed drop, literally. I go from upper 50's with 2 people to under 50 just by trimming up.

Just put me in there, it runs 64 or so.

Your motor needs to come down. At least an inch for carrying people.

I don't know if you were joking or not but, everyone who sees my boat at the gas station or boat ramp says " Damn, what size motor do you have on that thang?" The engine has way more power than I, personally, will ever need. It has 200 Merc carbs, 146 psi compression, wide open exhaust. and who knows what else.

The legend is, that the engine came off of a race boat, but I don't know the true history of it because I got it at a boat yard, and it had been sitting there for quite a while. The seller said that the old owner is living out of state. The engine will stand the boat straight up. I don't know if it is the modified 24 pitch chopper prop or what, but it will grab hard like going up the first hill on a roller coaster.

This is the entire problem. I don't want the boat to pop a wheelie and sink with passengers.

When I started restoring this boat, I wanted it to be an all around boat for several purposes, but so far it is only a 1 or 2 person, way out of balance, boat.

My cousins wanted to come down for the holiday and go for a ride, but I had to tell them no way. They weigh more than my parents. We will surely never get on plane or sink trying with the setup that I have now!

....when the use of the boat changes drastically like that (light load vs. heavy load), some things have to change. A hydraulic jackplate makes engine height changes as simple as flicking a switch. The prop is a bit different. You're going to need to find a prop with better load carrying characteristics, and use it when heavily loaded.

put a motor on it that has some balls.

An OMC would do nicely.

Joking, do you have a planing wing? That helped a bunch on mine. You can make one with hand tools and a piece of aluminum ( ie a road sign ).

I would try a through the hub prop.. maybe a 20 or 22 and put the heaviest people in the front.

put a motor on it that has some balls.

if you cant do this... put 2 fat kids (or mom and dad) on the nose and make them jump off once u get on plane ;)

A wing on the cavitation plate will help too. You can pick them up at walmart , they call it a stingray. They are easy to make too. I really think like I said at first you need a hydraulic jack plate to have the most all around usefullness of your performance capabilitys. If your jack plate is manual then you can lower it below the pad for giving people rides and having fun tubing and such and when you want to go fast just stop and jack it back up and there ya go ! Different props probably will help but it can be expensive finding the prefect one . I know a hydrauilc setup is not cheep but it will be well worth the investment once it is installed and you se how much it helps out. If your wondering where to lower it too just drop it all the way down that it will go at first and try it and then you can experiment from there. Its for sure once the engine is at the bottom of its travel your boat should plane a hell of a lot quicker and not pitch at such an angle when doing so. The wing will help even more.
