View Full Version : Engine height
I am having a problem with steering torque I have a manual jack plate and the boat seems to run its best at the current setting but my left arm is pretty sore after a long run is there any rule of thumb about engine height and steering torque?

Higher engine = More RPM = More torque.
Start doing your 12 oz. curls with your left hand (actually, there are some exercises you can do in the shower with your left hand also). You'll be fine.
Or, if you own a JRude or Yammie, you're probably the Power Steering type.
aka Barney: That's just my opinion, I could be wrong (NAAAAA!!!)

You may want to consider a torque tab. If your best speed is at the setting that gives you so much torque, you may actually pick up some speed with a tab, because it's likely that your skeg is crabbing a bit now, and a tab will help correct this, and cut down on the steering torque as well. There are rivet-on ones, and the best are weld-on. A simple $12.00 rivet-on one will tell you if you are on the right track, and if need be you can go to the weld-on later. Some folks bend the weld-on tab till they get neutral steering, or at least till the torque is minimized.

i got a 18 viking mod 200 merc, have run 260 ss on boat engine 3/4 above bottom with bobs low water you can drive boat with two fingers. no torque and that is flat out trimmed up. in fla at alligator my son took his 7 yr old and let him drive it at 70 + mph kid just stood in front of him and drove his heart out. later i did same thing with him same deal. torque tamer and set up work and you too can drive withone hand
