Hi!! It is easy to drop the lower unit and change the impeller. The hard part was relining every thing and getting it back together. Some people made sound easy to change the impeller and I guess that is that they were talking about. Changing the impeller they forgot about putting the lower unit back together. I quess they forgot the hard part.
Thanks for hearing blow off steam.
Thanks Ron

I quess it would get easyier with time. It can't get harder to line up all the shafts.

this here is the trick!!!! if you put the thing in gear before you take it apart then all you have to do is rotate the prop to get the splines realigned.

I don't think that's necessarily true. Many of the pros prefer to do it in gear, but I've always found it to be a royal pain in the ass that way, specifically because there's no exact positive position for the shift shaft as there is when it's in neutral. I've done it probably a hundred times and think in neutral with the shifter in neutral and somebody to rotate the flywheel either by hand or with a pull handle is 100X easier. I just did one for a neighbor yesterday and pulled it, put a waterpump and housing (including the lower) on it and all back together in about 15 or 20 minutes.

I Agree With Raceman, Much Easier.

Agree, but If you have to do it by yourself, in gear works good to. Like what was said before, 10 more times and you'll get the hang of it.

here is a hint that I do since i usually do it alone.. I take a rope with a slip knot and put it around the mid and the cav plate on the lower unit. Lift the LU almost into place and pull the knot and then take a additional wrap around and hold the rope. Now the LU will remain where you want it. Take a small screwdriver and use it to align the shift shaft with the lower unit. Now lift up a little bit on the lower unit and pull the rope a little tighter (so the shift shaft stays together). you will now have to rotate the flywheel a bit to align the shaft MAKE SURE YOUR KILL SWITCH IS DISCONNECTED. Once aligned, then you can more the LU the rest of the way up.

BTW, dont forget that the two studs coming up from the LU near the front of the case will need to have the nuts put on before you tighten any of the others all the way down.

It does get easier, but I remember having to call someone the first time I did it my self when I reached the total frustration point and could not make it work. Like riding a bike...

I like to keep mine in neutral so when I push the water pump housing down over the impeller it's much easier to get seated when you can turn the driveshaft (clockwise, that is);)

A lot of times i just yell into the wife and have her come out and bump the key when I'm ready to push the gearcase the rest of the way up.:D

rubber bungee wrapped 3 times or so around the mid/cav plate. Line up the shift shaft and turn the flywheel- the bungee will suck it right on.
