View Full Version : 1970 Mystry Duo
Does anyone have any info on these boats. I have one with 150 Yamaha on it. It is in great shape and I have yet to see another one anywhere. Are they common, rare, what is the deal on them? Thanks

I remember the mystery in the showroom of a local dealer. The big thing was that is was a Molinari design

It was a splash of a Dutchman tunnel. Duo changed the shape of the nose. They chopper gunned the boat which made them heavy. Dutchman was something like ~ 600 lbs and the Duo over 1000 lbs.

It was a Dutchman copy, I know for certain because we had the boat before Duo got it. we were duo dealers near Lima, Oh and picked up the Dutchman in the winter. Only engine we had loose was a 90 horse Johnson, put that on and and broke some ice to test it, Vic Porter and Med Smith from Duo picked up it up that day. By the time they got done I think it weighed well over 1000 lbs, and most of it was added to the top. The yellow and black did look good going slow.

I had a Mystery 17 with a 200 Merc on it. It was a handful. I kept the motor and sold it to a guy that was going to redo it and put a v-4 strangler on it.

Somewhere in my old stuff are some Powerboat magazines that have ads for the Duo, I'll see if my son can find one and post the pic.
There was a new Duo sold here by a local dealer but I never saw it after that.

That would be great. I have only found one picture on the internet of one and had not been restored. Any info would be great. Thanks

Use SnF's Search function ... search "advanced search" for duo, I found 4 pages and 30% to 45% were Duo boats, a bunch of tunnel pictures

The Duo Mystry and the Starcraft T-170 Eliminator were basically the same boat. Not many ever produced. I did a three year restoration on mine that I bought new in 1971. Greg is going to do a complete article on it very soon. You can see some pictures of it if you type in Starcraft on the search here in S&F. Starcraft acquired the molds from DUO as both companies were owned by the Bangor Punta corp. The Starcraft version is extremely rare and I have probably one of the last ones in existence. Mine is the trickest one ever created by human hands. Most people will tell you that miine will probably get me killed with the 2.5 EFI 260 on it but I have spent many hours with this boat and motor and have learned it well. I have popped over 100 MPH many times but am reluctant to push it any further as I know it is an older style tunnel but the things that I have done to this hull have made it super strong. It is not as light as some boats with all of the work that I have done but it is a great all arround boat. It will hold me on plane a 16 MPH on my trick skiis ( Used to ski for marine world ) with no problem. If you need any help with setup or props or anything else let me know. Don't want to sound like a smart ass but I pretty much know all there is to know about this particular boat.
Best wishes, Carter Powell

I just bought this 1970 Duo Mystry 17' from California from the original owner. It has been garaged since new. It was repowered in 1984 with a new Mercury 150HP v6. Its on its way back to N.H. now. Should be here Thur or friday. First thing will be to remove oil Inj and put some glass reeds in it. Looks like it is going to need to be jacked up some and put a real prop on it. I would like to get some set up info if anyone has any on it. Here are a couple photos of it. 603-568-4166

I don't think I have ever seen a boat with 70's vinyl on the deck. Looks like a very clean boat.

That brochure is hysterical! The "Capt" in the boat with the black socks and the securely fastened PFD chatting up the ladies. Too Funny! Moomba your new boat looks great.

"Mystry's unique Indy wedge construction and tunnel hull make it the sleekest craft on the water highway"
The advertising guy must have been burning the midnight oil to come up with that one.

Moomba that boat is gorgeous, that hull looks like a larger version of my scat cat playtoy boat with the square front tunnel design. Nice score!

The only value it would have would be to you. Its not a boat people look for or particularly want.
There isn't much info anywhere on the Starcraft. It was a modified splash and not very high production or sales volume.

True. And you can apply this to a few other older boats, if you come to think about it. Whether you tag them a historical piece or not, they're simply worth what the next guy is willing to pay for "your" pride & joy.

:iagree:and alot of these boats were not made for modern power. I like the sound of a 99ci your choise of flavor spinning up limiting your speed to 70's faster and possible diseaster. .02 Rick

I have never heard of a Starcraft being raced at all. I do not believe there was a lot of racing in the area they were made.
They look like they should be capable of speeds in the 70's ... and that would be "speed demon" speed with such a boat.
If you are looking for higher speed, you should consider something newer.

264394264393264395264396WOW!! I had a DUO 1970 a while ago yellow with black vinyl top, had a v/6 200hp MERC on it the same time I had my MAGNUM MISSLE w/ 2.5 OFFSHORE, did alot to it but sold it before dialing it in...always wanted to push it to see how it compared to the missle...264393

How did the two run handling and speed wise ??

I ran the MAGNUM MISSLE for a couple years , ran best with a 2.5 MERC OFFSHORE carb with 4" setback and 26P 4-blade MACH cleaver 90mph @6600...the boat ran nose high but never tried to lift on me or scare me but I felt that was close to it's limit..had center hyd steering and my 240lbs and good balance kept the attitude consistent...also loved a moderate chop and did not like sweels...the DUO was a much diff hull, wider and less tunnel height(see pic above) flatter running surface on sponsons, never got to lite it up before I sold it, the guy I sold it to still has it , says it runs great but don't know particulars, he was more a collector rather than a racer...DUO, DUTCHMAN, STARCRAFT were very similar bottoms, the decks changed from the one's i've seen anyway, CARTER POWELLs STARCRAFT is a great example of a reconditioned project...he sent me pic's of the rebuild...very impressive work...love these old tunnels, keep them going

The Duo Mystery 17 weighed in at 625 lbs. A friend of mine owned one when I was 16 years old and 5 of us could lift and readjust it on the trailer with a V4 Evinrude on it, so no way was it over 1000, we weren't just that big back then...
