And you needed one big motor what would it be?

Mercury 300XS
Yamaha 300HPDI
Suzuki 300
Mercury Verado 275

This is a stepped hull 25' CC for offshore fishing. What would you put on it and why?

I guess what I should have said was that things to consider other than all out performance should be gas milelage, warranty, servicabilty, etc... Performance advantages would have to be great to make me want a motor with a 2 year warranty when you can get some with 5 years. But I wouldn't want a slug that couldn't get out of it's own way either.

Its a pretty big heavy boat. No single motor is gonna give you a combination of performance & economy. Since you specify new rigging...the 275 Verado will push it. EastCoast just re-rigged a big wide 24 CC with one. Plenty of muscle. But it is only spinning a 15 or 17 Rev4.

Why not a pair of Twin 4 Strokes...regardless of brand ???

A single is cheaper. Twins would be nice. I've seen the ZF23 Donzi's rigged with a single Verado and been told it would run 60's. This Bluefin is lighter than the Donzi.

with that weight go for the cubics, then feul economy.

I've been corrected, apparently the dealer that told me the Donzi would do 60 with a single Verado was dreaming. With a 250 they run about 52 MPH, the same as the Blue Fin would.

So 3.3L HPDI Yamaha 300 with a 5 year warranty or a 275 Verado. I don't think the Suzuki or 300XS are really in the running. I don't like the rough idle that I've read about on the 55 degree Suzuki and the 300XS doesn't have a good enough warranty.

This is Mercury Propaganda, but what do you guys think?

One thing to consider with this test is that the 275 needs 92 Octane to perform to these levels. The 300HPDI only requires 87. If you went with the 275 Verado and ran it on 87 Octane, it would probably perform just like the 250, Yes, No?
