Hey guys,
Tyler here with some info. We own a champion 198 bass boat with a 225ho evinrude etec. This motor is exceptionable! We have hit a top speed of 74.5 (stock Raker II prop) with a 10 inch bobs hydraulic jack-plate and my dad 245 pounds, me 210 and 50 pounds of gear. The people who are running the 225 XS mercs and efi's are getting about 72-73 so it is defiantly as fast, if not faster then them (we wont even get into four-strokes....). It uses hardly any oil, we couldn't be happier with it. So if anybody wants to talk about it my email is needforspeed303@yahoo.com (needforspeed303@yahoo.com).

Thanks

Hi Tyler,

Do you own or work at Quam's? I live in McFarland, WI and drive by everyday on my way to work in Beloit, WI. Etec won the endurance race in Rueon (sp?) so they definitely have potential. I personally will stick with my high spinning Merc for now but am considering a new boat in the next few years and am keeping my eyes peeled for potential.:)

I thought the 225HO was just the 250 with a decal swap?

The H.O. engines have a different (and unique to the H.O. series) ECU tune.

No, i don't work there. We are very close to the owners. The Quam family is really nice, and will really bend over backwards for their customers. That's great, well when you are looking for a new boat talk to them about the Etecs, just tell them that Bob and Tyler Allen sent you. Have a great summer guys.

The HO series include a specialy tuned ECM and come with the lightening gearcase (the standard Etec's come with the Magnum gearcase).

Is the lightning case the hi perf one that Bass & Walleye had problems with when they tested the ETEC and had to remove it and use a regular gear case? In my opinion the gearcase is the weak link in Evinrude's offering, hard to compete with the Sportmaster for surfacing applications. :)

yes, but if you read the editors notes 2 months after, when evinrude gave them their prototype for the new one, it was .3 faster then the yami, so they are working on it.

No they had to switch to a lightning case because the "hi-perf" one had issues in a surfacing application, and in turn they had to lower the engine, which cost the BRP engine 2.5 mph or so.

Thanks Lockjaw, I remembered that BMC had a new gearcase but it wasn't ready yet for the review but didn't know what it was called or if it was even out yet. I don't think they will get very far with the go fast crowd until they have a surfacing lower that is at least as good as the Sporty, I hope they come out with one. :)

Tyler we follow everything regarding hi-perf boats and B&W is the only magazine that still comes even close to giving hi-perf outboards a place (besides a certain on-line magazine of course). :D

John Tiger does much of the testing for B&W and has a pedigree that goes back quite a ways (not saying he is old though) and is pretty respected in the industry.
