Polishing without clearcoat

My boat does not have a clear coat and it is painted with automotive paint. The guy at the detail shop told me not to use the meguiars 1,2,3 step because the polish may take the paint off with no clear coat?

Can I polish before I wax if there is no clear coat for a great shine?

Air-dry paint without clearcoat will tend to "wear" off if you use any polish on it. Wax will do pretty much the same thing. Good luck...
