I am considering buying a boat at a lake a few hours from my home. It has a 175 Black Max on it. The owner believes it may be an 81 or 84. I received some pictures of it. I was just wondering if any of you can tell by the photos what year it is or narrow it down for me.
I would just like to have as much information about it as possible before I make the trip out.

Thanx in advance.

Welcome to the forums:)

Looks like a '77 or a '78 to me. Older than 1980 for sure.

Didn't they start the Black Max logo in 76. Merc came out with the 175, and OMC came out with 200. Chuck.

It's DEFINATELY a '76 or '77 if the stickers are original.

I think '76 said Black Max on bottom, like this one, and '77 said 1750 on bottom, but after 30 years my memory can't be trusted

: I have one just like it on a Viper and it is a 1976 model according to the serial number. This was the first year for the V6 Black Max.

What ever happened to the real Black Max guy? I met him at Mercury Dealer Congress in maybe 1976. He was a paid spokesman and looked like the Black Max artwork,or vice versa?

It has the first generation lower-unit on it & the oldest trim clamp bracket that has the hydraulic trim fluid that runs through the center of the engines stainless mounting bolts. Those special bolts were expensive.:) AirRide

Early 1976. The early ones had the blunt gearcase such as shown. Blew out about 70-72mph on a bass boat. I had one on a Hydrostream Ventura and the local Merc rep comp'd me a gearcase housing so I wouldn't hurt myself!
