I have been thinking about getting an IPOD or MP3 player for the boat, which do you guys think is better? CDs get to be a pain and I hate buying CDs for 1 or 2 songs that I like. From what MP3s I have heard CDs still sound better though. Also what are the best music websights?

iPod with iTunes is by far the best player/online store combo you can get. You can download the iTunes music manager and online store for free at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ if you want to try it out before, but if you buy an iPod, the software comes with it.
I tried other mp3 players before iPod, and their quality wasn't on the same level.
I physically buy all my cds though, but I have used iTunes to buy a few. It's a very quick and very easy way to get music.
Also, there are tons of ways to integrate an iPod into your audio system on your boat or vehicle on the market now

Get an Ipod, they rock.
I just bought and installed an Alpine CDA -9857 head unit in my RX7. If you havent heard of this head unit it allows for full integration of the ipod to the headunit so the ipod is fully controllable through the headunit. Very nice piece! You simply plug the pod into the wire you run from the back of the unit, put it somewhere safe and then select your stuff from the scroll menus on the headunit. Im talking artist, playlist, album, random...everything.
Check it out!!!

Technically, an ipod IS an mp3 player. ;) Definately go with an ipod, everything else is a joke. I have 3 of them now. :D

Itunes wont work with Win98se:(

I haven't looked at the system requirements, but I find that very hard to believe. There are a lot of people still using windows 98, Apple would be stupid not to support them. Just go to itunes.com and download it, see if it works. It's free...

Love my I-pod, and just set it up to work in our cruiser by using one of these:

jPort Jack for iPod or MP3 Players

by Jensen
http://asaelectronics.com/img_c/prodimgs/jportcloseupt.jpg

Features

Don’t leave that iPod® or MP3 player on the table. The JENSEN® jPort™ provides direct audio interface between MP3 player headphone output and stereos.
Installation is easy. With 9 ft. of included cable, you can place the jPort™ at any convenient location. Simply plug the jack end into the back of your JENSEN® stereo and mount the jPort™ in the desired spot. Now you are ready to plug your iPod® or MP3 player into the port using the included audio cable. For increased stability, use a pod cradle (not included).
Works with MCD5112, MCD6115, MDV6115, MCD9425, MCDA1, MSR4115, MSR4425 and JCD3050 JENSEN® Stereos.
*Stereo must be equipped with auxiliary input.

The best part is it only cost $10-$15 and sounds way better using line input rather than an FM modulator like most people use ;)

I know FM modulators suck. My XM in my truck came with one and i couldnt stand it the way it sounded. I use a cassette adaptor and sounds much better. The stereo in the boat has an aux input. I tried a friends IPOD in it and it sounded pretty decent, but still not as good as a CD but sure is alot more convienient.

Very true, but an open boat isn't the best high fidelity listening environment :D

No doubt about that. My boat has a pretty decent amount of bass and switching from ipod to cd you could tell a difference, but I think a can live with it.

There are several programs that do the same thing as I tunes....You dont have to use I tunes with your I pod. There are some programs that allow you to share music with other I pod users :) but I tunes wont let you:(

iTunes couple with myTunes Redux will solve that problem jmc. iTunes no sharing policy is the reason why they can sell any and all music titles legitimately. I do have some gripes with the file format and restriction issues with iTunes, but it's still the best. Plus, with the right programs, there are many ways around those little annoyances.

How about an anti I-pod vote...

I paid $200 for a 4g Sandisk E-250, (you can get'em for around $120 now). It does everything an Ipod nano will do, plus it has video, microSD expansion slot, FM tuner built in, voice recorder...etc, you can even use it as a flash drive if you want. And I don't have to subscribe to any proprietary software (i-tunes), just rip'em using win media player and go.

Actually, The sound quality would be in the sample rate it was ripped at. The higher the sample rate, the cleaner the music. If you want CD quality, you can rip the music mathematically lossless, but each song is about 25mB.

I think in a boat an mp3 player is the way to go!

LakeRacer,
I had a very similar mp3 player before I got my iPod. I bought it because all of the reasons you like yours along with the fact I was "anti-iPod"

Then the hard drive went out...

Then Best Buy tells me they don't carry that model any more...
Then Best Buy replaces it with an iPod...

I'm sure there are many viable mp3 players out there, but I'd rather not just take a chance on another.

I hear ya...there isn't much electronics that are repairable these days, most devices are thowaway. If you had a small mp3 player, it used flash memory chip to store the music, not a hard drive. Kinda like a USB jump drive or the SD card in you digital camera.

But I am no expert.

A Sony PSP can play Mp3's or any other type of media, including video's on it. And it has wireless internet, and can do GPS navigation - If you can get a hold of an older version. You can do more with the older ones, the new ones are 'crippled'. Sony plays this little cat & mouse game with the hackers to prevent "homebrew" software from running on it. (because of piracy) But Ive been doing GPS navigation with it for a couple of months now.

At some point, Im going to try and make it control my trolling motor wirelessly. There's a guy that made his CAR to where he could drive it with his PSP!

Any of you using the hard drive ipods.
Does it skip or stop when the water is choppy.

I will give you another option. I installed a stereo in my boat that plays a disk of mp3 files. The sound is not as good as the original cd, but very close. I can put as many as 200 songs on one disk. You don't have to get the songs from i-tunes. you can rip the songs off the cds you have at home are borrow a buddys collection and get the songs you like off the cd. It is alot cheaper than a I-pod. You also get a FM and AM radio. So come sat. radio ready. You just have to purchase a part to connect to the back of the radio and you have sat. radio. There is a fee for the sat. Radio. I am very happy with the sound and amount of songs on a cd. I have a cd that is country, rock, and etc. I hope this helps you in your search for great sound in your boating time.

Not at all. I am an Ipod fan. Main reason is the vast products you can buy and adapt the Pod with. There aren't any other mp3 players on the market that can be controlled by different manufacturer's head units. I have an Alpine unit in my truck, a Sony in the boat, along with a Marantz docking station hooked to the home theater (which can be controlled through the Marantz's reciever's remote)....... all can search through playlists, artists, and albums through their respective systems. No other player even comes close.

If you are an ipod/mp3 fan and won't need any radio, think of hooking the ipod straight to a marine amp and a speaker setup. I have installed over 50 of these setups for many people and it works great, totally elimnates any corrosion issues with a head unit and connectivity. You can email me for a MS word document with all the deatils if you want. my email is glen@veradoclub.com

ipods are junk!!! Santa brought one for my daughter. I spent to much time on the phone with them, in all 4 hours. They said I would have to call Micro Soft to fix it, STUPID MOVE APPLE!! So I called, had to pull out my wallet, NOT!!! Asked the dude on the phone about the ZUNE, worked great he said, took back the ipod bought a ZUNE. Plugged it in 15 minutes latter daughter loved me again. Bigger screen to watch S&F vids on and has a 30 gig drive. Oh and I have XP Home on my lap top. I'm not sure of the Op System you need for the ZUNE, it doesn't say on the box as well. The ZUNE comes with a disc so you don't have to go to a web site and pray it's up and running to get the unit to work. ipod PLUG AND PRAY, ZUNE Plug and Play.

I have had my IPOD for 6months and no issues. I can download songs from any of my CDs and have never had any issues with Itunes. My head unit in both my truck and boat have AUX inputs and it works great. I have it in a leather case, its been dropped several times, been left outside on the console of the boat and still keeps going. The only issue I have seen is you cant plug the IPOD into another computer to trade music. Oh Well.. I paid for my music someone else can pay for theirs. One thing I would never do is buy their high dollar adaptors when you can go to Radio Shack and get them ALOT cheaper.

i had my ipod for a year and 1 month with no problems at all. Finally my battery died so i went to apple. My warentee was up and i was basically screwed. I went to the genius bar and the guy was like " look you missed warentee by a month so im just going to hook you up". Right then and there he pulls out a brand new ipod(ushually old ones fixed up with 90% new stuff) and hands it to me. Total time, 10 minutes! Its not only the ipod that counts, its the customer support that they offer.
