Has anyone ever seen a 60's Merc Inline-6 with a serial# ending with the letter 'P' ?? I recently acquired what looks like an original stock 67-68 short shaft Merc 1000SS with Ser# 1466749P. I have a dozen or so older Mercs and I've never seen one with a ser# with a "P". The motor looks like a typical 67-68 I6 w/Thunderbolt ignition. I'm familiar with the list of normal Merc serial #'s on Bob Grubb's site and I realize the "1466749" doesn't fall anywhere near 1967-1968, so I was wondering about that "P". Could this have been some type of prototype ??
Many thanks,
Marty

Thanks for that info guys!!
Looking at the ser# plate, the "P" is in a larger font than the other #'s, so it does appear that the "P" was added later. On the Pacemaker rebuilt/reman motors, what did the ser# signify (since this one was not in the correct date range of the actual motor components)?
To help further with this particular motor, I copied this info from the block this evening. Any comments about this engine from this info will be greatly appreciated. I'd like to know if this motor might be regarded as one of the "good" models to spend some time and $$ (and of course fun) on... or not... Not as a racer, but just as a fun motor...
Block casting#: 836-2655
Block id: TIGER
Block ser#: 2112762 (1967?)
On exhaust side of top of block:
Large "T" -- center (readable side to side) next to 1/4" screw plug
Large "10" -- front outside (readable front to back)
Small "2" -- rear inside (readable front to back)
Many thanks for your help,
Marty

I might be wrong, and if so it'd be the second time, but I wasn't aware that Merc did the Pacemaker program on 60's model engines???????

They absolutely had the program in the 60's..I bought and sold 1965, 66 and 67 models myself through K& K Outboard.
