A friend is thinking of buying a 36ft. Intrepid with three 1999 Opti 225 salt waters on it. He called me to ask my opinion of the engines. I have heard there was a problem with the early models but I don’t know exactly what. Anyone know? Thanks, Jack

I had a 99 Opti 225. I had a bad fuel pump when I first got it. After that, never had a problem. Great running motors, and great on fuel. I just bought another new one for my new Checkmate.

I have 2 customers with 1999 3.0 litre Optimax engines, and they have been pretty much trouble free. Routine annual service and winterization seems to keep them running. The only real drawback I can think of is the 99's are not SmartCraft compatible....and I really like the SmartCraft system.

As stated above the throttle position sensors have been the one problem we've seen the most, the 99's have 2 on each motor.
