View Full Version : I just stripped all the splines of a brand new prop hub...

I tried a new propeller today - A brand new cleaver supposedly made by Performance Propeller, which I bought from a S&F member this fall.
Anyway, after a few runs - about 7 gallons of fuel - it seemed like the hub was spun. We got towed back to the ramp, and when I removed the prop from the shaft, it turned out that the splines of the prop hub were completely gone.
What used to be the splines of the prop hub were sitting between the prop shaft splines, looking like a bunch of matches. I just scraped them out of there.
Has anyone experienced the same thing?

damn man... thats weird. maybe a junk hub?
those splines should hold WAYYY more torque than what any OB can produce.

Marcus , Was this a bronze hub or an aluminum hub ? And did it have the full spline leigth or the short splines for a OMC ? Did the prop ever leave the water and renter at a high power setting ? That's about all I can think of to cause this problem , Unless your really making some serious HP. Rich Martin 018

It could have been aluminum. It said Propco on it.
And did it have the full spline leigth or the short splines for a OMC ?
Full length, as far as I remember.
Did the prop ever leave the water and renter at a high power setting ?
Well, the water was not smooth as silk, but I did not go wave jumping.

Maybe the 2.5 260 was so happy to come out of winter storage and do a little bit of spinning that it developed rapid bursts of 850 hp. Like when you let the cows out in the spring.

So how did it run???:) That is pretty strange, how many blue bottles/tanks did you have in there?:D

It ran really well. It did not rev as high as I had expected given the nominal pitch of the wheel, but it was really fast considering that it was quite windy with fairly big waves.
Maybe we passed through a cloud of nitrous hovering above the sea... :D :D

Glad it run out nice for you. Do you know the wheel? They all seem to be different...I run a 19SS on my poor little bayliner and I put my 20 SS laser on it, I think the rpms dropped 1500! On the other boat a 21 alum merc runs the same rpms as the laser, but that is considered normal. And, that was after I had cup added and the edges thinned on the michigan wheel SS 19. The laser has little more diameter but jeez what a difference. I had 5 props I tried on the checkmate before the laser, the numbers didn't always mean much.
Well that fog, that must be it! I bet you traveled through a time warp and that is why you didn't think you went any faster with 850hp. You better stay out of that area, next time you might not emerge from the green fog like you did this time...and we would miss you here...:D :D :D LOL;)

Same thing happened to me when my gearcase shaft seal failed.
Not sure of cause or effect, for what it's worth...
