Just wondering guys if anyone can give us some info on the traditional 3 blade cleaver vs. the Laser 2 and bravo 1 props as far as performance goes. It would be for a 454 365 HP with a bravo one drive, and nose cone on the drive. It is on a 23 foot Phazar. His speeds now are 66 MPH with a 23 Mirage, but he wants a bit more out of the package, so wondering what he should do with props. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
P.S. - He tried a 25 ' tempest plus today and couldn't even get the boat on plane, it just vented before it could grab water to get it out of the hole, so i assume that the Tempest Plus props are out ! :)

Laser 2 is junk!
Others props you have need more input from other memebers on this board.

Captain, put solid plugs in the PVS (performance vent system) holes and that Tempest won't vent at all.
Laser II is NOT junk, it just has to be used for it's intended purpose. Laser II is a FANTASTIC prop for shorter (15'-18.5') V-bottom light weight boats running under 200 hp, with X dimensions 2" or below the pad. Smaller Checkmate, Hydrostream, etc.
It's definitely NOT made for bigger boats or real big horsepower or high X dimensions.

The Laser II is an old design, and JW is correct, it does not carry big loads very well. For the price, it's not a bad deal when used within its limits, but on that big of a rig, it would not be my choice. I ran a large hub 27" Laser II on my 19' Rapid Craft (hull about 800 lbs) when I first rigged it with the 150 Merc, because I made a wild guess on a prop to get a baseline and got one cheap. It was hard to get it to run the same way twice and was very difficult to drive, but I finally managed to make a 69 mph pass at 5600 revs.....the identical numbers to a worked 26" Hoss Hyperdrive. Did I say that? Yep, guess I did.
A lighter boat would be a better place for it, but at that point you'd probably run an overhub anyway if it is a high performance rig. Unless you're talking slower speeds and lower pitches, then maybe not.

bravo 1 will be one of your better choices if you can turn them.. there rather large in diameter and hve alot of blade area.. start with 22 and go up from there

I've used a Laser more than my other props for years, on my Virage and on my SS2000.
Not the fastest, but it will turn decent speed and pull a skiier.
Raised too high it gets spooky on the Ally. The boat doesn't hook, but the bow will drop and the revs will go up. Raised too high on the Virage, it just didn't go fast.
Over-hub cleaver is out, they need to be completely surfaced.
A thru-hub cleaver is a different animal, I don't know much about those...

23' Doral Phazar, 454 Mag with Bravo One drive and nose cone.....RPM range for this engine is 4600-5000
Laser 2 27' - RPM : 4900, Top Speed : 65.2 MPH, hole shot was bad, had to walk it up onto plane.
Bravo 1 24' - RPM : 4900, Top Speed : 65.1 MPH, hole shot was decent, but not the best one.
Tempest Plus 25' - Couldn't get it on plane so didn't bother running it. The boat has thru hull exhause so the venting system won't affect the prop since there is no exhaust there anyways.
Cleaver 21' - RPM - @ 3/4 throttle we were already @ max RPM so didn't bother running it more. It got out of the hole decent and lifted well, just to small of pitch. Would like to try a 25'.
Mirage 23' - RPM : 5300, Top Speed : 67.5 MPH, hole shot is the best so far and ride is very good. Too high RPM's though....
If we could find a 25' Cleaver thru hub, or 25' Mirage plus, i think those might be the two that we are looking for. The goal is 70 MPH...... Thanks guys for your time.
You'll get your speed with a 25" Mirage it looks like. Congrats Cappy!
