i had looked on the apba champ web site and saw that a couple of teams are listed as running evinrudes for 06. since the e-mail for champ was in charlotte nc i e-mailed them. actually got a reply. they said the omc was in fact approved for competition and had been all the time. they did not answer my question as to if any of the teams would be running them. advised me to inquire at sea-way.com. i went to this web site and there was info on the smaller racing engines but no champ info. i didn't bother them so that's all i know.

thanks for the vote of confidence fred. i'm a 6'5" broke spectator at the present, but i would love to see some multi brand racing. i can't believe yamaha has never taken this racing seriously.

I don't think they ever finished a race running 100 %. Even with Merc parts they couldn't keep it togeather ! We'll see how the Jonrude's fair. Mike

you talking about the yamis or omcs not finishing? i think i've heard the yams used some merc internals.
I saw someting about it on Seebold's site yesterday. The competition will be great for the sport.

The Yammaha's tried plenty of Merc internals. I was a Mechanic/ Pit crew for a SST 120 boat for most of 2 seasons. You get to see and hear just about everything !
I'm with Fish. Champ needs more support, and if it takes Evinrude to give it that than so be it. They (Erude) still hold the speed record ! I run Merc's but that doesn't mean I hate any of the others........Mike

i just can't believe the japs have never seriously dabbled in champ. it seems the yamaha effort was mostly grass roots.i'm from the cycle industry and yamaha made their reputation on racing. for years they were the only ones making consumer roadrace motorcycles and have always made hop-up bulletins available to the public. shoot even suzuki has a strong racing background. they even made a 5 cylinder 125cc roadracer for gp's in the 60s.

You build fast motors and they will sell. Wait fast ,reliable motors. Mike

My Unlimited motors are the F1 Yamaha's that ran in CHAMP. There are no Merc internals in these motors. They have mercury fuel injection and Mercury starters. When they had titanium rods made for them they then had the ability to finish every race. The problem is getting the ECU's dialed in, which never was finished due to lack of time and money for more R&D. A Merc ECU will run OK but not to the full potential of the motors. The fuel curve needs more work. Mike

thanks for the reply mike,
i have no problem with merc, and appreciate them promoting the sport so much but lately boat racing is like watching iroc, everbody running the same thing. my first race in person was last years odba plymouth event which i enjoyed a lot. i only got to go sunday and only one non merc was there and really wasn't a true drag effort. i think the few fast omc's ran on saturday with bad luck.brand rivalry would only be a good thing. when i was a kid nascar was a fight between chrysler and ford. i used to go to motorcycle flattrack races that might have had 10 different brands of cycles involved from many different countries. good stuff. i really hate to see talented people who love boat racing that can't even afford to make but a few champ races a year.

....to use PCUs for fuel control on the (Merc injected) Yammies? That should/would simplify a lot of fuel control issues. ;)

They actually did try a PCU but had better results with a RAPAIR box. I think time and money needed to continue prop testing along with the ECU testing became too much and it was just easier to throw the Merc powerhead on it than to keep fighting the good fight.
I run a PCU but haven't done anything with it. It is more fun to tune it with Alcohol & Nitrous.
These motors are nearly equal to a s3000 and I think with some time for tuning they would probably outperform a stock s3000. It would certainly be much easier and cheaper to buy a S3000 than build one of these from scratch. It is fun being different though!
