I just got the shipping bill in the mail from when I shipped my cowl to Pyro, and all I can say is DHL ROCKS!!!

The crate I built was pictured in another thread here, but I'll summerize by saying it was big, and heavy - 70 lbs. I put a lot of wood into that crate, including a couple of 2x4 pieces to anchor the pan to.

First, I called UPS, $150-$160 to ship from Seattle to Michigan. FedEX wanted $100. Both said it would take about 2 weeks to arrive.

I called DHL at 2 o'clock in the morning, and they said they could pick it up in the morning at my house way out in the country for only $3 additional. The total shipping charge including pickup would be billed to me two weeks later, and I could mail in a check or pay online.

They arrived, muscled my crate into the truck, and it arrived at Pyro's shop less then a week later with no damage.

I received my bill today - $55 (including insurance)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wanted to wait until I got the final bill before I bragged too much for DHL, but after getting the bill today - these guys got my business from here on out. The other thing is because they come out and pick it up, you could probably just specify with most cowl vendors that you want them to call you when it's ready to go, and then call DHL and tell them to pick it up at the vendor's retail pickup location. Then pay for the shipping yourself. I don't know if Bob's or Eagle One really like that, but it's better then paying HUGE money to ship a cowl when you don't have to.

I just sold a cowl to a guy in Texas, and it was pretty much the same cost (including $500 insurance) advantage over UPS. You would think $10-20 savings would be a deal, but a hundred is ridiculous.

But, DHL now had size restrictions starting last week, and won't ship over 150 pounds. Mine was a little lighter but it got there in 3 days.

You can't beat DHL, UPS blows.

I have been so successful with DHL that I have set up an account with them. The least expensive is their ground service. I shipped a 2 piece bench seat from Florida to N.J. and it sost $26.00. Other shippers were over $200.00 they pick up at your door and deliver when promised.

sounds like a really good deal. also dont forget about Kitty Hawk Air. They do overnight air freight to most major citys. but ya have to drop off and p/u at the airport freight terminals. cost me $150 to ship lower unit across the country. only about 12 hours from drop off to avialble P/U in its destination . They dont beat things up. they just wrap it on a pallet and set it in the plane, very little handeling.

We use them at work all the time to fly stuff in from Europe. Good service and very businesslike when the guy shows up with a delivery.

As I mentioned in the other thread, the package was not damaged in any way, other than some normal handling marks. No holes, tears, breaks...

Yea, I've had an account for a long time, since they were Airborne Express. I used to only use them for bigger stuff, but after that cowl deal they are getting all of my business.

I have been using DHL for quite some time, and had no problems, prices are great.

In May 2006 they will be increasing fees on some items

With this there will also be some increasing on the price structure. Should still be way lower than UPS but if you get a box over the 130 inch measurement rule, they are going to put an additional $30 handling fee.

If you keep it smaller than the 130 inch and in the Oversized 2 category they should still be very competitive and probalby the best price.

Yep, They changed their size limitations the day BEFORE I went to them to send my powerhead off.....it was 165 lbs, and the new limit on weight was 150lbs.....

On the other hand,,, here DHL is partnered with Danzas. So I shipped it via DHL/Danzas easy enough, just had to find the Danzas terminal.

I sent a crate recently, UPS wanted 120 bucks,,, I shipped it via DHL for 48 dollars ! i'm sold !

Over here we had a company called Loomis. DHL bought Loomis out. Loomis was awful, DHL straightened them out.
DHL is huge overseas too. I think they are the largest in the world.
