Hey all,

Just a heads up that soon I'll be posting a comprehensive feature on photography at boating events, tips for photographing your boat, etc.

Thanks Jim - by the way, I finally read your book, "Secrets Of Propeller Design" and I thought it was fanastic. I'll call you about it this week, if that's okay.

I could add video content to it too, but it will delay the article a bit...

if its not to much trouble why not make into 2 separate articles. i think that there is a good bit of info that can be passed out in reference to both cameras and videos. just my thought. some go hand in hand but trying to get a running video of a high speed pass or getting still shots there are differences and it would be nice to have. looking forward to it which ever way you decide.

I think it would work best as a single article. Many basic techniques apply to video and photography - but I never liked doing video. You guys are going to make me dust off my videocam. :)

Yousif,

Here's a photo I captured using the Nikon D200 and the Nikkor 70-200VR AF-S 2.8 lens. The 70-200 Nikkor is an amazing lens with incredible optical quality and it's brutally fast. It's also a beast, weighing about 4 pounds by itself.

Thanks Steve and Casey - I should have this article finished soon. :)

The D200 is a great camera. Not as heavy as the D2x, but almost as fast. Autofocus is very fast and accurate, and image quality and dynamic range is excellent. This was taken from a moving boat:

This will give you an idea of how large the 70-200VR 2.8 is:

But i thought i would ask anyway, do you take your pics in raw format?

Sometimes. It depends on the photos I'm shooting and how much time I'll need to process them. If I'm shooting a weekend event, I'll typically shoot 400-600 images, so I'll shoot JPEG. If I'm shooting low light indoor images or other specific scenes, I might go to RAW format for extra processing headroom.

greg is your upcoming photography article going to go into detail on things like exposure, shutterspeed, and aperture settings? if not, is there a good book your recommend? i've been reading a lot on the dpreview website, but i'd like something a little more condensed.

thanks

Casey - yes :) I can't think of any specific books offhand, though. My article should be very comprehensive. Of course, I'm always here if you have any questions too. :)

Hi Yousif,

Thank you for the kind words :)

I did hear of the forthcoming Nikon model. My guess is it will be something between the D70s and the D200. Nikon says 10.2 megapixel, which means it likely has the same CCD as the D200, but likely will not have the D200's 4-channel output. If that's the case, the new model will have a 2-channel 10.2 megapixel CCD with the same image quality, but slower write speed.

I'm guessing the new model will be called a D90. Plastic body (instead of magnesium-alloy), 3 FPS continuous shooting (instead of 5.5 on the D200), and CAM-1000 autofocus (same as D200).

Essentially, I believe it will be a more affordible version of the D200. That's just my guess though. We'll know in 17 days. :)
