View Full Version : Crating and shipping a COWL, the right way...
I purchased this lightweight cowl from user dma251, and he did a fantastic job of crating it to ship across the country safely.
He built a wood crate out of 1x2, and stapled a heavy cardboard jacket to it, and taped all the seams. There is clearance space on each side, and some packing material stuffd in there for impace protection. The cowl is wrapped with bubble and duct tape. The duct tape in the third photo was wrapped around the crate frame, the side panel of the crate has been removed in this photo.
Here, I have partially disassembled the screwed-together crate and jacket, and now I see why the cowl wouldn't come out after cutting the tape. It's been attached to the base plate with wood on both sides, screwed together. The skirt is tie-banded to the baseplate on the inside of the cowl where it won't be damaged. Very nice... Thanks!

It's a relief to see someone NOT bitching about another S & F member. :D
It's obvious that this has been a long winter for many.:p
Good luck with the new cowl. Those old XRi cowlings weigh a ton.

My thinking on the crate was simple - I would rather pay for a few extra ounces of crate material, then have it damaged on the way cross country to Chad.
It was actually really cheap to make, maybe $20 worth of materials, including the bubblewrap and screws.
I spent about 2 hours in my livingroom putting it together, and it was actually kind of fun to build. If I did it again I might flood the spaces around the cowl with foam peanuts instead of the old newspaper bags I used;)
Enjoy it.

I bought an alien cowl mold from a guy in florida last year and that is the exact way it was shipped. Except it had expanding foam packs in the sides. Although it still arrived badly damaged as the shipping depot here in Dublin lost it for three months. It did a circumnavigation of the globe and the package was pulled appart by every customs office on its way as it had no accompanying paperwork!

I shipped a cowl via the post office (they destroyed it) the guy that bought it was furious with me until he realized who's fault it was and made a claim. there is no substitute for insurance!

I recently shipped a V4 block to WI using a cardboard box. I completely lined the box with SM and made a bunch of wedges and fitting blocks from foam to stop the block from moving around. I glued all the foam together with a hot glue gun. Super strong!
