When ya get stopped on the water are you wearing a lifejacket and kill switch lanyard?
I notice when I got my Allison I rarely got stopped. When I had my Glastron I got stopped all the time. Only difference I can see is in my Allison I wore my lifejacket and kill switch lanyard.

When I had my little Glastron GT150 with a 150 on it I got stopped a bunch of times and never had my jacket on. Since I've had my Vector I've never been stopped but I too always wear my jacket and so does everybody else on board.(even in the hot Florida sun) I better knock on some wood now because it will probably happen next time out.

Last time I got stopped I was givin' a friend's wife a scare ride in one of the STV's. I had on a Lifeline and she had on a PWC vest with 100MPH written on the back in big letters. We'd just done a full acceleration blast from off plane to about 85 or 90 and I saw him coming. When I stood up in the seat to get my Lisc. and registration, the dweeb in green told me that my lifejacket wasn't legal since "those racevests" arent USCG approved. (I was surprised he knew it) I had an extra ski vest back in the passenger compartment and he made me move it to the front "within my easy reach".
Next thing he did was pull a little note pad and pen out of his pocket and asked what kind of modifications had been done to the motor. I told him I didn't know, that it was just like I bought it. I think the guy was really itchin' to write me a ticket for something, but we were several hundred feet from shore, and there wasn't another boat in sight. He made a comment about the motor being loud, but I guess he didn't have a meter with him, and I told him it was just stock Merc exhaust (champ housing).

When in the XR, I always have Vest and teather on....
In my Xb-2003, It depends on the vest,,,,,If alone, yes always,,but always teather the kill switch no matter what.
If I have a few people in it, just crusing, or water skiing,, no vests, but yes on the kill switch... but vests are always on board...
The only time I have been stopped waz after a race day was over, (in the XB-03). The water boyz mainly wanted to see what made my outboard bassboat faster than the V-8 V-drives I race against,,,:D ,,, but they did ask all the legal stuff while we were yapping.....
When they asked if I had the throwable floatation device,, I showed em' I had it,, but then I asked them,,, IF I am alone, fall otta my boat,,who da hell iz gonna toss me the floatation device? ? ? They say - good point,, thanks,,bye..

I never used to wear my jacket much, but wear it almost all the time now with the bigger motor unless I'm just cruising around at 30 mph or something. Never been stopped that much. I've had a few confrontations over the years with the cops on our local 300 acre lake, one degenerated into a shouting match after the cop made up a new law on the spot but it got resolved with one call to the cheif. Worst incident I've had was about 8 years ago in Twin Lakes, WI. Dickless Tracy wrote me a $78 ticket for coming within 100 feet of a swimming area on plane. How is someone not from that town supposed to know that an orange slalom course marker is a no wake buoy, especially when it's right in line with the ski club's jump ramp. My boat hasn't been in their holy water since.

That's along the same lines as the law requiring a lifejacket to be on board but not require people to wear it. I say what's the difference between a jacket and a cushion if you're not wearing it. Like you have time to put the lifejacket on when the boat capsizes. What's even dumber is requiring a throwable on boats over 16 feet but not under. Isn't someone more likely to lose their balance and stumble overboard in a small boat?

I never even start the big motor without a vest on, any passenger with me always wears a vest, and guaranteed if a cop is on the water I'll get stopped. Memorial day weekend last year I got stopped three times in one day, two of those times were by the same cop! He watched me catch a fish, fill the livewell, throw the fish in, then came alongside to inspect the catch. You know how long it takes to pump a dang 40gal livewell out so he can see a stinkin fish?

What the hell are water cops:confused: :D :D :D :D
I could hang quad 280's on the back of my Vking, drive it standing on my head while drinking a keg of beer and there is nobody around to stop me:eek:
Not saying it's legal, just the most anyone could do is shake their fist:p
Not for long though, it's behavior like this that is bringing outright powerboat bans on a lot of our waterways, they don't want to police them so they just ban powerboats, COMPLETELY:mad:

the only time I have been stopped we were skiing. I never wear a vest, unless its cold outside, but I attach the lanyard.
Its not like they can catch a fast boat anyway. Mine would probably outrun a police boat, but it would take a while. Since I don't have mirrors, and mine is loud, I could probably argue not hearing or seeing. Believe me I sure don't go looking for them, I don't need the hassle.

CD I know what you mean. The only time I have EVER been checked in my Allison was the very first week I got her and that was just because we were in TX fishing at Fork. They were just hopin to catch non-resident fishermen without licenses. 7 years later I have never even gotten a second glance. Around here they won't even mess with in state fishermen. They know most are following the law and usually experienced boaters.
The ones they look for are ski-boats and pontoons FULL of people. The most common violation is improper/expired registration and lack of proper number of life jackets for each occupant. I watch em get plumb giddy when a pleasureboat CRAMMED full of families goes by, Barney nearly breaks his neck gettin too em. And since I am getting a deckboat for my family (lol NOT gettin rid of my Allison) I KNOW damn well I will have to suffer through the incessant searches and requests for registration and lifejackets (and yes that REDICULOUS "throwable" boosheut)! I think I'm gonna put some big ALLISON stickers on the side of the deckboat, reckon that'll fool em? :D
I wish I could tell them to go pester the 15 year old a-hole that is rockin beached boats on daddies lake lice!!!

On Schroon Lake,
My friends older brother is a Sheriff in charge of the "Water Cops". Once in a while he likes to sneak up on them and see if they are doing their job.
So I pile 'em in the STV and usually make a couple of blasts by his boat. Yup, he comes after me, just to find "Danny" gigglin' his back side off....
Pretty much gives me carte-blanche;)
The other things that's pretty cool, one ARSEHOLE keeps trying to post noise and speed restrictions. This guy HATES IT, when I have the local sheriff IN the boat with me passing him. He even testified against this guy concerning the speed limit.
Then again, nobody like this guy but blowboaters   :D

every time i get in a hp boat i have on a padded lifejacket cause every boat is diferrent the only time i dont wear one is when I cruise with my dad in his boat. Not only that but all the other non-thinking virgin boaters and pwc drivers there is no way of predecting were there going or doing

I got stopped once before I even started the motor. But I got a great compliment when the cop was accusing me of switching HIN numbers. He said that a 1987 can not look as clean as mine does. But after that I have never been pulled over on the lake again. Knock on wood. But I always have my vest on. I may go fast but I would say im one of the safest drivers on the lake, but hell that is easy to do in Jersey.

When I was down in florida about 2 weeks ago I hooked up with Pat aka LIL'TOY and his 22 Eliminator w/v8 johnson. The coast guard flagged us over and handed my son ticket for a free ice cream at McDonald cause we were wearing our life jackets. That was the coolest thing ive ever seen. I thought for sure we were done.

In all states Federal law applies and the Coast Guard regs will be enforced if you get pulled over, regardless of any or lack of any state laws.

Fished a tourney saturday, and wasn't wearing a life jacket, nor was my partner when we came into the area he was in, and we went on around the bend, and he came over, and never said word one to us.
That's the way I like it too.
Why are they always idling around too? Seems like everytime I see them, they are either sitting or running at idle speed.

Are we supposed to wear them ?? I never wear a vest and the key is in the switch no kill switch .. been stopped a couple of times in the chain of lakes . once I was pulling three tubes and no spotter the second time he thought I was drinking beer becouse everybody else in the area where i just left was drinking. I think I may have saved somebody else from getting a ticket.. but they never say anything about life jackets of course the tank only runs around 60 trimed out at full throttle ..

Everyone on the lake is an old fart so if you even look like you can go fast they yell at you. The old guy across the river was the worst. He used to yell, throw things, and put big signs on his lawn.
Just wait til you get that 650 XS fired up;)
We just might have to "Pay him a visit" ;)

Last year i was putting in at morris IL river . there was a coast guard boat about 5 in front of at the ramp . when it is my turn i walk up to the coast guard guys who have the hole dock taken up with there boat. i ask them to move there boat so i could tie my boat to the dock while i park the truck.he looks at me and said sorry dude . all day they are pulling people over and giving out tickets.they never said a word to me.I allways have on my jacket and the throwable whisle fire ext are in clear view. i never have a problem with the cops.
