Mercury trigger assembly

Question is, what is the purpose of the trigger assembly

if yer talkin the little round piece inside the stator under the flywheel it controlls the ignition timing.. it fails and yer rowin home... been there done that... no fun... still have the scars on my fingers where I held it inplace on way in from ocean runnin in my fissin boat..
