I have been going back and forth with solutions to the charging on a 260. I hate having to hook my battery up to a charger every night (either bring the battery in or run a cord from my room) at boating events. I also was jonesin for some tunes in the boat but new I could not run a stereo with the 16amp stator for too long.

Choices: add an additional battery and an additional 40-50lbs somewhere in my boat, or go with the Simon alternator for v6 outboards. http://www.screamandfly.com/home/evaluations/simon_motorsports_alternator/simon_motorsports_alternator_1.htm.

at first I was leaning towards the second battery, but in reality I would still have to charge them each night, but now I have two to charge, and really did not want the extra weight. I called Eric Simon after reading the article in the link above- man does that guy know his stuff. Long and short, I got the alternator kit spent about 20 minutes (including 5 minutes on the phone with parker), and it was on and running. That thing is a freakin work of art!!!!!!!!! All the parts were perfect and even included a little bottle of loc-tight. I even got him on a Saturday afternoon on the phone to double check something. just bolt on and go- it was even simple for me and that is saying a lot.:D

First class guy, first class product, first class support. Thanks Eric, this thing rocks!!!!!!

Not even close to hitting but I have an alien cowl. It is my understanding that they will not fit under the 260 cowls, but no problem what so ever with the aliens.

Looks cool, you won't miss not having to charge the battery one bit, whats strange is that alt. is on the opposite side as the 280..

fastercat, I could not get the picture to enlarge so I am not really sure what style covers you have, but the Hi-Po covers like the 260's come with I do not think will work. The aliens will and anything else you probably would be best to give Eric a shout at simon motorsports first. 760-440-9334

sorry to hear that fastercat. I would keep an eye out on the buy and sell forums. used aliens come up all the time and that could cut the cost down some; maybe even work a trade with someone. BTW, I spoke with a board member over the weekend who is currently running twins. he is thinking about putting one of these on just one motor with switches to charge both batteries just in case. Having this alternator has taken away the one thing that was a total PITA for me with running a HiPo motor, now it is pretty much gas and go with a stereo sure to annoy everyone!!:D :D

thanks steve and sorry about stealing the line, it just seemed so appropriate. Between the offshore exhaust and the stereo, I ain't sneaking up on anyone:D :D

Someone had posted before that they had used a heat gun and heated the old style cowel, sorta bulged the heated cowel out enough to fit the alternator underneath.....

might do a search on the topic...

What is the highest charging stator for the mercs? Can you put them on the performance motors? 16 amps doesn't cut it.

I believe its a 40 amp that comes on the Promax's, but I don't think you can put them on 245's or 260's because of the flywheel differences

I designed this kit for all 16 amp motors, 2.0's, 2.4's, 2.5's. Here is a motor that I just finished.

Eric was working on a "rivit on" cover/ scoop to put on a stock HP cover if you wanted to cut a hole for clearance.
I think Toffen was the one who bulged his cowl with a heat gun. He was going to give me the dimentions so I could make a mold but nothing ever transpired.

Hi!

Its Espen who have modified the race cowling. I have 2 Merc 2.5 EFI SS engines myself now, and will buy Simons alternator. So the heatgun is ready to use!

Hi ! The alternator is a must for every 260...
I have one on a 2x260 boat under the old cowling .Used a heat gun ant a round steel pice to shape out a bulbe for it . I burned one and when I was out to day the alternator got realy hot maybe its to hot inside the old type cowlings.

I can't stress how good eric's customer service is. When you buy his products you buy a great piece of machinery and customer service that mercury and others can't touch. Eric has many customers, however when you talk to him it is obvious that your satisfaction with his product is of paramount importance. When you treat your customers like that they keep coming back.

Any more news on getting the Simon Kit to work with non-alien style cowlings?

Fish

if you are running a 260 style factory cowling, I have seen pics where people have used a heat gun to make room for it. There were three of theese for sale about 6 months ago for not a lot of money in the buy and sell section, and I don't believe they ever sold.

as far as any other cowling, you might want to contact Eric Simon, if anyone would know it would be him.

why doesn't someone just make an aluminum 40 a flywheel?? then you wouldn't have to go to the alien cowling(i think they leave a bit to be desired in the looks department) not to mention now not only do you have to buy the alt. kit but you must now buy a cowling
