I spent 15 years working in labratories testing all sorts of hydrocarbons, including fuels and oils, theres not as much difference that one would hope for. the big difference is in the color of the bottle. Minus a few additives, colors, on the PPM level, thats about it. and as for different gasoline brands...yea, right. Trust me, buy whats on sale. My test results told them how much of what to add, usually came out to about a qt per rail car of which ever's brand additives.
A friend of mine currently works for shell oil in the bottling division, bottling two stroke oils and motor oils. Big tank of oil, lots of different colors of bottles. ha ha. The joke is on the consumer. rotella is the only oil thats in its own tank. the rest gets blended from the same tanks.
All you guys run what you want, but I buy the tech 2000 oil from wally world. 6 bucks a gal. Thats what he runs also.
but like I said, run what you want, Marketing guys kids have to go to college too. Exactly where is the Quicksilver Refienery anyway?

in my 15 years of working on outboards, I have seen the inside of many gearcases...........and I seen water damage to gears/bearings to many times to count.........Mercury gear oil (or whoever's oil it is) seems to offer alot of protection from this. Gears/bearings dont rust near as fast if merc oil has been used..........lubrication wise I am sure there isnt much difference between the oils, but given the environment the oil is used in, the protection offered by the merc stuff makes all the difference.:)

Ive ran the Merc HiPo gear lube for years now in my lake application..
One good thing about it is the ability to mix with water and not break down..
I ran the Castol Synthetic Gear Lube on a Case with a "Known" small prop shaft seal leak and after 1 trip out , that shi% was white and Gummy.. put in 26oz, got out 12oz's..
But the Merc , just lightened up in color , by still maintained some level of viscosity...
The Aisyn lake oil (I think 30 weight) is pretty good stuff too..

just remember to not over fill the SM, in fact you need to drain 2-3 oz after the fill. other wise it will blow the oil out the shift seal.
