i dont have the merc spanner system so i put as much pressure as i can on a 12" lever
Nut torque is 250 ft-lb for sportmaster/torquemaster, 210 ft-lb for production models.
CAUTION: (from the merc service manual) before torquing bearing carrier cover nut, gear case should either be mounted in a stand specifically designed for holding gear cases or bolted to a driveshaft housing to avoid possible damage to the gear case.

msm that right i wait until i mount it on the motor before the final torquing.
more importantly use a new lock ring and be sure its well setted. i use a lagre pair of visescripes [ use rags on outside surface]to flatten the tabs down tight.
thanks guys for the info maybe one day i can help you all
