I've found a 79 17 or 18 ft. Baja thats been sitting several years that I may be able to pick up very cheap. My questions about it are as follows. Are these boats fairly light or heavy, were they good handling, what are the ups and downs of them?
Thanks Al

They are a well made boat especially the early years. The downfall
is the weight as for handling I... Never owned one but if ya get
a hold of Baja235SS ....... He has one and will tell ya all the pro's
and cons.
In my book they are a great all round fun boat to have. What is
the condition of the boat ??????

He hasn't had it wet yet, still working on it. But he flipped it so he might have an idea about weight.

On laborday I purchased a 20 foot with a 2.4 Mercury on it. It is a heavy boat with lots of room. I did a quick few mods and service and ran it once with the wrong prop. It wouldnot set any speed records but it handles the bay chop well. Looks like a retro hot rod but in reality its heavy. Rick

Hey Big Al.
The Baja's were very well constructed boats although they did get a little sloppy in the mid 80's and contuined that way for a few years.
The only down side to the older ones was as Woodco stated
the weight (they weigh a ton). My fully rigged 20' SS weighed in at a whopping 1635 lbs (she dont weigh nowhere near that now :D )
They are a great all around family type boat, if it's speed your looking for there are a lot easier ways to go then building one of these
for some info on the SS model check out

It is a PDF file so it do'es take a while to load
Let me know if theres anything i can help you with

I used to own a '86 17' baja. chopper-gun hull, poor waterproofing of wood parts, looked good though

Sorry it took so long to get back, but here goes the hull is in need restoration, stringers need replaced, transom may also need replaced. It looks a lot like thee one Mr. Clean has for sale but I'm preety sure it was a 79 (didn't have a chain saw with me)and the lay out was all most identical. The thing has been sitting in the same spot for over 5 years, exposed to the the weather,it has an 85 hp omc on it the color is red and gold,I'll le tyou all know if I get it or what.....Al

I gotta '77 16'. Seems to built well. Very heavy though. We been rebuilding it for some 9 months now. Like yours, mine was left outside exposed to the elements. We've replaced the transom and the wood behind the dash. The floor was solid and original glass had only minor stress cracks at the splashwell. It's been a great project boat. Would do it again in a minute. Got pictures?

I heard it was from a shotgun blast during the drug bust on its final voyage. I hate when that happens. The driver needed some serious orthodontia.
